New Wood Deck from an Old Wobbly One
My dog loves to sunbathe on the deck by himself like this. However, this deck is getting very old, and the railing is wobbly and unstable. In winter, snow shoveling on this deck is difficult because of its instability. As you can see, the wood looks faded and worn. Additionally, I didn’t like the color of the railing.
The previous owner painted the railing, shed, and some other wooden spots with what was probably leftover paint. That’s why the colors didn’t match. This green didn’t go well with the house. Moreover, the railing grid was not comfortable for us.
Last summer, my husband started a project. Beyond the railing, there had been a big wooden deck space on the ground. We got rid of the huge deck and posted about it. The grass is now recovering naturally, little by little. My dog was curious about the summer project.
The old wood hadn’t been treated. Some pieces were cracked, and the construction style wasn’t consistent. After removing the boards, we found fallen leaves underneath. I cleaned them up and picked out the old litter beneath.
He finished half of the deck, and we already felt how much more stable it was to step on. Luckily, the weather stayed dry, so we didn’t get rain while building it.
We decided to paint the railings turquoise. At first, they looked very bright, but after a few days, they blended in with the atmosphere. My husband also coated the deck with a darker color, like dark chocolate. Together, the colors reminded me of chocolate mint ice cream.
After rebuilding the deck and repainting the railing, everything looked much more solid and attractive. When I step onto it, nothing wobbles anymore, including the railing.
By reusing wood for the railing and changing the caps to black ones, it looked much better. Some parts were tricky to put together with nails, so I had to help my husband stack them properly.
We also made enough space under the bar for snow shoveling. We still need to add support between the top railing and the bottom, and we’re considering installing wires instead of grids because we don’t want to block the view.
Overall, it looks so much better than the old wobbly deck. The turquoise railing also matches the shade of the greenhouse colour. Even though it has faded, it looks nice, almost shabby chic, I think. The bottom part of the steps is still old, so that will be our autumn project. We still have some outdoor renovation projects ahead, which will be challenging. My husband’s DIY skills are definitely upgrading!

グラグラしている古いウッドデッキから新しいものへDIY
わたしの犬は、ウッとデッキでひとりで日向ぼっこをするのが好きです。しかし、このデッキはかなり古く、手すりがグラグラしていて危なっかしかったのです。冬に雪かきをするのが難しいデッキで不便でした。見ておわかりのように、かなり色褪せて古びていました。さらに、手すりの色が好みではありませんでした。
元の家主さんが手すりの色を塗ったのだと思いますが、物置やその他の木材をいろいろな色のペンキでランダムに塗ってありました。ありあわせのペンキを使ったからか、色合いがマッチしていなくてバラバラでした。手すりの緑色のペンキの色が家の色と合わないのがずっと気になっていました。それから、この手すりの格子のデザインが窮屈で好きではない感じでした。
去年の夏から、主人が改造計画をスタートしました。手すりの向こう側には大きなウッドデッキのスペースがあって、少し前に全部取り除き、その様子を以前投稿しました。草がようやく少しずつ自然に伸びてきています。私の犬はこの夏の改造計画に興味津々です。
古い木材はきちんと加工されていないものでした。いくつかヒビが入っていて、組み立て方も統一感がありませんでした。古い木を取り除くと、下にはたくさんの落ち葉が詰まっていました。久しぶりに全てを掃除すると、下からゴミが出てきました。
ようやく半分木材を入れ替える作業が終了しました。すでに、歩いた感じが全然違い、かなり安定しています。幸い、乾燥の天候が続いていましたので、雨が降らずに無事に作業を終えることができました。
あの緑だった手すりの部分はターコイズ色にすることにしました。塗り立ての時はかなり明るい色に見えますが、数日経つと周りの色合いと馴染んで落ち着きました。主人が、敷き詰めたデッキをコーティングして、落ち着いた色合いに仕上げました。私にはダークチョコレート色に見えます。なんとなくこのセットはミントアイスの感じに見えてきます。
デッキを改装して手すりを再利用して色を塗り替えると、かなり雰囲気が変化し、しっかりとしたデッキに見えはじめました。改めて登ってみると、もうグラグラしないですし、手すりも安定しています。
手すりの部分はもともとの木材を再利用したのですが、キャップは黒の新品に変えました。引き締まって見えます。木が歪んでいる部分に釘を刺すのはなかなか難しく、二人で協力して押さえつけて釘を刺しました。
以前の手すりと比べて、前よりもゆったりめに隙間を作りました。上下の手すりの間の広い空間部分には、転落防止用に後ほどワイヤーを取り付ける予定です。前のような格子状の手すりよりも見通しが良くなって空間が広く感じます。
グラグラした古いデッキと比べると、かなりよくなったのではないでしょうか。ターコイズ色の手すりは向かいにある物置の温室の色合いと似ているのでお揃いに見えます。おそらく、これから色褪せていったとしても、シャビーシック風に見えるのではないでしょうか。このデッキの下部分の木材はまだ古いままです。その部分は夏の終わりから秋にかけて仕上げる計画中です。まだまだ家周りで直さなければならない箇所が残っています。そこはかなりの難関だと思います。主人のDIYスキルが少しずつ確実にアップしてきているように感じます！
