How to make puppets from fabric tights

Happy Sunday to everyone – it’s been quite a while since I last did a craft project. This time, it’s an educational project for my son and my niece; I’ve been looking after her since her mother passed away, and I help her with her homework. The thing is, next week is their end-of-term project, and for that they have to put on a puppet show. So the first thing I did was help them find a script with the theme they wanted: ‘Don’t trust strangers’. Then I searched online for puppet designs that were easy to make and wouldn’t require too many materials; this is because craft supplies are expensive. Well, I found the easiest and cheapest option: using tights. My son suggested for a moment that we use old tights, but to be honest I didn’t like the idea and preferred to buy new ones so they’d look better. Here I’ll show you how I made these two puppets using tights.

Feliz domingo para todos, bastante tiempo sin realizar una manualidad. En esta oportunidad es un proyecto educativo de mi hijo y mi sobrina, ella está a mi cargo después del fallecimiento de su madre y la ayudo con sus tareas. Lo cierto es que está semana que viene les toca ya el cierre pedagógico y para ello deben realizar una obra de títeres. Así que lo primero que ayude fue buscar un guión con el tema que ellos querían. No confiar en desconocidos. Luego busque en la web que modelos habían de títeres que fuesen faciles de realizar y no se llevará tanto material; esto porque los materiales de manualidades están costoso. Bueno ví la opción más fácil y económica de usar medias. Mi hijo por un momento me dijo que usará medias ya usadas, la verdad no me gustó la idea y preferí comprar para que tuvieran mejor presentación. Aquí les mostraré como realice estos dos títeres con medias de paño.

1 pair of grey woollen tights
A thick silicone rod
2 felt-tip pens, purple and green
4 small anime-style beads
Cardboard from a notebook cover
Strips of fuchsia and blue foam

Step by step

Paso a paso

To start making these two puppets, the first thing I did was cut two circles out of cardboard from the cover of a notebook I no longer used. This was to create what would become the puppet’s mouth. Once the circle was cut out, I turned the sock inside out, folded the circle in half and stuck it to the tip of the sock using hot glue. After sticking it on, I turned the sock right side out again and could now see the puppet’s mouth.

Para iniciar la creación de estos dos títeres, lo primero que realice fue dos círculos de cartón de una tapa de un cuaderno que ya no estaba en uso. Esto con la intención de realizar lo que va a ser la boca de del títere. Una vez tenga el círculo ya cortado, volteo la media y el círculo lo doblo por la mitad y pegue con silicón caliente en la punta de la media. Luego de pegar , volteamos nuevamente la media y podemos ver ya la boca del títeres.

Next, make two cardboard circles, cover them with red paper, and then attach a tongue. Glue this circle in place using hot glue.

Posteriormente realice dos círculos de cartón que forre con papel rojo, para luego colocar una lengua. Este círculo lo pegue con silicón caliente.

Now take the four foam balls and, using a hot knife, flatten one side of each ball, then stick the two foam balls together to form the eyes. Here, place another small black circle cut from a piece of foam. To make the eye stand out more, take a fuchsia strip of foam and place it around the eye. Also use a blue strip for the puppet’s other eyes.

Ahora tome las cuatro bolitas de anime y con cuchillo caliente aplane por un lado cada bolita, luego pegue ambas pelotas de anime que serán los ojos. Aquí coloque otro círculo pequeño de color negro de retazo de foami. Para darle más vistosidad al ojo, agarre una tira fucsia de foami para colocar alrededor del ojo. También utilice una tira azúl para los otros ojos del títere.

Next, I attached the hair, which is made of yarn; I used the whole length to make the hair look full. Here, I divided it in half and tied it with the same yarn, then trimmed the ends. I positioned the hair behind the eyes and styled it. I did this for both puppets.

Ahora viene colocar el cabello que es el estambre; el cual utilice completo para que el cabello fuese abundante. Aquí dividí por la mitad amarrando con el mismo estambre, luego corte las en la puntas. Aquí coloque el cabello detrás de los ojos y arme el cabello. Esto lo realicé con ambos títeres.
