Hello Hive DIY Community friends, good evening everyone.✨
I hope you all had a wonderful day. Today I’m back again with a brand new DIY blog. Without spending any money, I made a pot holder / oven mitt to hold hot pots and pans.
As I have recently started a new household, I had to buy everything new—pots, pans, stove, furniture, and all the necessary things. I needed a cloth to hold hot pots. Of course, I could have bought one, but then I thought, why buy it when it can be made easily at home? So, without wasting any time, I quickly made this very simple and useful pot holder.
I didn’t spend any money to make this item, and today I want to share with you how I made it. This item has been extremely useful for me. These kinds of things can be easily made at home, and you can also make one by following my idea.
🪡First, I collected different types of fabric. I used an old pair of pants and some leftover fabric pieces. Everything I used was recycled.
I cut the pant fabric into equal square shapes. All the fabric pieces were cut in the same size—six centimeters square—using a measuring tape. I used five layers of fabric because it will be used to hold hot pots, and the thicker it is, the safer it becomes. However, since I was sewing with a sewing machine, using too many layers could break the needle or damage the machine. That’s why I used five layers.
For the top layer, I used pure cotton fabric. In the middle layers, I used handloom (tat) fabric because it is a bit thicker. Then I added the pant fabric, again handloom fabric on the opposite side, and finally pure cotton fabric at the bottom. This way, both sides look nice with printed fabric, and the middle remains thick and strong.
After arranging the layers neatly, if I felt any side was uneven or crooked, I trimmed it to make everything even. Then I prepared the border fabric by cutting it lengthwise. I cut the border fabric evenly, measuring about two inches.
Now the cutting part was done, and it was time to sew. After sewing neatly around all four sides, I stitched the middle part in a cross shape. You can also make flower patterns or other beautiful designs using a sewing machine if you like.
I used cotton and pant fabric here, but it’s not mandatory to use only these fabrics. You can also make a beautiful one using old T-shirt or vest (genji) fabric.
I made a total of five pot holders this way.
This item is extremely useful in the kitchen. While cooking, we constantly need to hold hot pots and pans. If this cloth is within reach, we can easily and safely hold any hot item. And when I cook in the oven, this item is absolutely a must.
For us women, this is a very practical and useful kitchen item that can be made very easily at home. We always have old clothes lying around—just cut them nicely, sew them properly, and your daily essential item is ready.
Let me know in the comments how you liked this idea, whether you would like to make it, and how helpful you find this item.
Once you make this, you can easily use it for one to one and a half years. It can be washed as many times as needed without any problem.
