A few days ago, while walking around the garden near the house after an evening rain, I came across a small group of mushrooms with grayish-purple caps that caught my eye. After photographing and tracing its characteristics, I identified this fungus as Leucocoprinus ianthinus.
I found this fungus growing in a pile of dry leaf litter under a banana tree, a damp and shady environment. Conditions after rain and lots of decaying organic material seem to really favor the growth of this fungus.
Leucocoprinus ianthinus is a saprophytic fungus that is commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas. This fungus is also known by other names such as Leucocoprinus lilacino-gradulis. Despite its beautiful and striking appearance, this mushroom is not known to be edible and is best just observed without touching it too much.
