The roots of the lotus plant live and grow embedded in the bottom of ponds, swamps or lakes with long stems/leaf stalks and flowers as high as from the bottom of the pond to the surface of the water. With these long stems, the lotus leaves remain on the surface of the water. Likewise the stem/flower stalk, the long flower stalk makes the lotus flower float on the surface of the water.
The Nelumbo nucifera type lotus flower is red and has a quite beautiful shape. I took photos of some lotus flowers with my cellphone camera.
