Field Notes
Observation of April 17, 2026.
Sunny morning, temperature 22°C and humidity 90%. Observation begins near a small urbanisation in a rural area.
Small bluish flowers from a plant that seems to be creeping because the leaves spread through a single stem, ending in a flower with very striking bluish petals and yellow pistils in the center. All the flowers seen have the same number of petals: two rounded petals, very soft to the touch.
I collected flower and leaf samples for detailed observation with a magnifying glass.
The leaves are an intense green with the underside lighter. The upper side of the leaf is rough and has small stiff white hairs. Some leaves seem to have a kind of white spot, not apparently part of the plant itself (maybe a disease or some insect).
The ground where the small flowering plant was found is sandy, dry, with rocks that I identify (I could be wrong) as limestone or calcareous.
Some approximate measurements taken in the field using a ruler:
- Flower size: ~2 cm
- Leaf size: ~4.2 cm
Summary of Commelina – Source: Wikipedia
Commelina is a genus of herbaceous perennial plants in the family Commelinaceae. It includes about 200 species, among them Commelina communis, C. diffusa and C. erecta.

- The genus was named by Linnaeus in honor of three botanist brothers named Commelin: the two large petals represent the two famous brothers, and the small petal symbolizes the third, less known one.
- They grow in urban soils, abandoned gardens and places with partial shade or filtered light.
- They attract bees, butterflies and birds.
- Some species (such as Commelina benghalensis) are edible and used as a vegetable in Southeast Asia and Africa.
Taxonomic information:
- Kingdom: Plantae
- Order: Commelinales
- Family: Commelinaceae
Selected species mentioned in the article:
- Commelina benghalensis
- Commelina communis

Notas
