I had that famous photo of the Loch Ness Monster in mind, where the creature is seen out of the water; I wanted to take that idea a bit further and create something more direct and threatening. I also had a distant sunset background in mind; at that point, I wasn't sure if this was going to work.

Tenía en mente esa famosa foto del Lago Ness donde se ve a la criatura fuera del agua; quise llevar esa idea un poco más lejos y crear algo más directo y amenazante. También tenía en mente un fondo lejano de un atardecer; en ese punto, no estaba seguro de si esto iba a funcionar.

When adding the base color, other things to add in the background came to mind, such as these mountains and later some trees; I want it to have the perspective of someone who is in the middle of the lake and bumps into the creature.

Al momento de agregar el color base, se me ocurrieron otras cosas que añadir en el fondo, como estas montañas y, más adelante, algunos árboles; quiero que tenga la perspectiva de alguien que está en medio del lago y se topa con la criatura.

Now it is time to apply the small details, blurring and highlighting... everything from the layer that is furthest away. I was tempted to highlight the sun more, but I feel it wouldn't look right; I had also added white clouds, but in the end, I changed them to tones similar to those of the sky. This way, I make sure that nothing in the background takes away from the character's importance.

Ahora es momento de aplicar los pequeños detalles, difuminar y resaltar... todo desde la capa que está más lejos. Me vi tentado a resaltar más el sol, pero siento que no se vería bien; también le había puesto nubes blancas, pero al final las cambié por tonos parecidos a los del cielo. Así me aseguro de que nada del fondo le reste importancia al personaje.

I tried several techniques for the water and to attempt to make a small reflection effect; out of the whole drawing, I think this part was the one that took the most time and attention. Let's keep in mind that the character must also appear to be in the water, so I copied this layer and used it at the end to better blend the character's body. Once the entire character is ready, the final details remain to be added.

Intenté varias técnicas para el agua y traté de hacer un pequeño efecto de reflejo; de todo el dibujo, creo que esta parte fue la que más tiempo y atención se llevó. Tengamos en cuenta que también el personaje debe parecer que está dentro del agua, por lo que copié esta capa y la usé al final para difuminar mejor el cuerpo del personaje. Una vez listo todo el personaje, quedan por dar los detalles finales.

Now on a top layer, we add the rest of the details like water, water droplets on the skin, and most importantly, that splashing water effect to better integrate the character with the background. Now that I think about it, it would have been great to add more movement to the nearby water.

Ahora, en una capa superior, agregamos el resto de los detalles como el agua, gotas de agua en la piel y, lo más importante, ese efecto de agua salpicando para integrar mejor al personaje con el fondo. Ahora que lo pienso, habría quedado genial ponerle más movimiento al agua cercana.
