Today, I would like to share one of our Shan musical instrument sets call Shan long drum. Like in the Rising Star game, there are percussion instruments of various kind, our Shan people also have a few drum instruments. One of them is our Shan long drum.

The drum is not played alone but along with other instruments - a set of cymbals, and gongs (photo above). They produce a very harmonic musical sound. The following video is what I had uploaded to 3Speak last year.
The video was taken at a pagoda umbrella hoisting ceremony near my town. We usually play the long drum set at festivals and ceremonies. In winter Tai new year day, Shan people gather for the new year ceremony, usually make a bonfire (bonfires), and dance around the bonfire with the music from the long drum set.
There is also a song called 'Ka Pan Kon', which means 'Dancing around the drum' in our language. The following is the video from Youtube that Shan ladies are dancing around the long drum instruments. It could be a little bit boring looking from outside. However, it is quite fun and joyful when joining in the dance. First, one needs to learn the dancing steps and then learn the hands movement. It is simple, easy to learn and fun.

Next time, I will share more about our Shan (Tai) instruments and how we use them in festivals and ceremonies. I hope you enjoy them.
