Taking my country Nigeria as a case study, I can relate with several reasons or factors why having piercings as an individual in our contemporary society can put you at a disadvantage. No doubt that piercings are means of beautififications for women but has been inculating by men who love to have piercings into their bodies. Piercings for a woman is naturally and culturally accepted inserting areas of the body which is mainly the ears.
Somehow people who have more than one persons in their ears or nose chest boobs and other areas are considered to be wayward or useless, several judgmental attributes are passed onto these people based on societal norms and traditions because it is believed in Nigeria that a culturally behaved person should not Pierce their bodies.
In a contemporary society we see guys who Pierce their ears to wear gold earrings and so on and it has become a source of admiration for such people, while this may seem off and weigh what is on people others actually love their men to have piercings. I really do not have a problem with a guy or a lady having piercings on their body is but sometimes people do it out of moderation and becomes irritating.
I was watching an interview recently and I saw a guy who proudly mentioned that he has over 15 piercings in his body, I'm looking at the whole thing all over his body because he had in his ears multiple piercings in his nose his eyes on his skin his chest and so on,it wasn't fascinating at all, rather it was all messed up.
There are Several factors in place why piercings can put an individual at a disadvantage especially in my country Nigeria. One of such reason is based on professional ethics, in a professional setting it is required for workers to dress formally and appropriately following a particular dress code as set up by the company policies. One time on Twitter I read a thread about a potential job seeker who lost or job because the human resource manager said they cannot employ a man with piercing on their left ear, there are reason being that they have potential client all over the world and most of them have work ethics that requires professionalism as it's utmost priority. So this can be a huge disadvantage to an individual except the person is the owner of his business or company.
Another factor that comes to play in having multiple persons as a lady or as a guy is based on society and traditional norms. In some cultural context in Nigeria it is belief that people with unnecessary piercings are regarded as wayward and useless, so they get this kind of judgmental feeling from strangers and can also fish social stigma. Also in terms of religious context, it is considered as an abomination for a Christian to indulge in such activities being that it is considered on holy and not Christian like.
It is worthy to Note that, most of these perceptions are changing considering the fact that the temporary society is no longer a archaic and subscribed to a particular set of beliefs. The world is changing and everyone is entitled to what makes them happy.
