La fuerza del liderazgo | The power of leadership [ESP/ENG]

Saludos. Atiendo la gentil invitación de la estimada amiga Hive account@miriannalis para dar respuestas a unas interrogantes surgidas a partir de la excelente publicación de la amiga Hive account@yadimelgar.

Desde la adolescencia me comenzó a llamar la atención por qué a la gran mayoría de las personas se les hacía difícil tomar la iniciativa. Eso lo veía mucho en el sitio donde vivía. Era una zona que se estaba consolidando, en una barriada popular del Oeste de Caracas, y donde había muchísimos asuntos por resolver, la gran mayoría de ellos relacionados con la necesidad de establecer algunas normas mínimas para la convivencia y, sobre todo, resolver problemas en servicios básicos como agua, luz y alcantarillado.

Los problemas estaban, podían durar mucho tiempo y aún así la gente seguía en sus cosas como si nada. Si no aparecía alguien, de dentro o de fuera, que comenzara alguna campaña de sensibilización y asumía el gran compromiso de comenzar a hacer gestiones el resto no se movilizaba.

Esa observación de cuando era muchacho me hizo llegar a una conclusión que en principio fue intuitiva, pero que más adelante fui confirmando con los estudios: los humanos necesitamos de alguien que nos vaya marcando el camino, lo que llamamos líder.

Cuando comencé mis estudios universitarios en el Pedagógico de Caracas, a comienzos de los setenta, dominaba el ambiente académico de nuestra institución una doctrina creada por el gran educador y líder político “Luis Beltrán Prieto Figueroa”, recogida en una obra suya llamada: “El Maestro como líder”.

Todos mis Maestros hacían causa común para reforzar esa idea en nuestra formación como futuros docentes, e insistían que no deberíamos vernos como simples “dadores de clases”, sino que teníamos la misión de llegar a las comunidades a liderar procesos de todo tipo. Eran tiempos donde la Democracia se estaba consolidando y donde la Educación Pública trataba de llegar a todos los rincones del país.

Para garantizar nuestra contribución al desarrollo del país, el Ministerio de Educación nos ofrecía al graduarnos empleo en algún sitio del interior, no era obligatorio tomarlo y muchos lo declinaban, pero otros como yo lo aceptamos.

Al llegar al sitio de trabajo, en un pueblo limítrofe entre Aragua y Carabobo, solo habíamos dos profesores graduados, el director y yo. El resto de los compañeros lo constituían algunos estudiantes de Educación y personas de diferentes profesiones. En ese momento entendí lo que trataban de explicarnos mis Maestros en Caracas, sobre todo en lo referido a tener clara conciencia que deberíamos ser un ejemplo para los demás.

Así que sin habérmelo propuesto nunca de pronto me vi promoviendo iniciativas e ideas entre los compañeros y los representantes de los alumnos. Para algunas estaba preparado, para otras no. Pero la gente confiaba en que yo tenía la capacidad de poderlos orientar adecuadamente. De algún modo y en una escala relativamente pequeña durante aquel tiempo ejercí muchas funciones de liderazgo. Un proceso que continuó durante toda mi vida laboral como profesor de bachillerato y universitario.

Paso ahora a comentar las preguntas generadoras que la amiga Hive account@miriannalis nos deja sobre el tema…

¿En qué área has influenciado con tu ejemplo?

Donde más puedo precisar alguna influencia es en el área de la formación docente. Durante muchos años fui profesor de los alumnos que se formaban en el Pedagógico de Maracay. Con muchos he mantenido contacto a través del tiempo, y es satisfactorio cuando me comentan que han seguido mi modelo pedagógico, basado principalmente en estimular la imaginación de los jóvenes para que sean capaces de desarrollar un pensamiento crítico.

Hay otra influencia que no es fácil precisar. Algunos de mis ex alumnos que se hicieron profesionales en otras áreas como la medicina, la ingeniería o el derecho, me comentan que una de las cosas valiosas que les quedó de nuestra experiencia escolar fue valorar la importancia de la lectura para su crecimiento personal. Recuerdan con afecto como muchos de los textos que leímos en algún curso les abrieron nuevas perspectivas en la vida.

¿Qué es eso que te hace único?

No podría decir que alguna cualidad mía sea única. Pero una de las cosas que me constituyen es la firme creencia que todos podemos ser cada día mejor.

¿Cuál es tu mayor fortaleza?

La constancia. Gracias a Dios tengo una gran disciplina y una gran fuerza de voluntad. No me cuesta trabajar con esfuerzo y dedicación hasta conseguir mis metas, sobre todo si están relacionadas con el bienestar de mi cuerpo y mi mente. Si no debo consumir algún alimento no tengo problemas en decirle adiós, si tengo que incluir alguna rutina de ejercicios, pues la hago. De alguna manera también he ido avanzando en dejar ir aquellas cosas que no dependen de mi.

¿Cómo ejerces una influencia positiva en otros?

Trato en lo posible de no imponer sino más bien mostrar. Me gusta darles a las personas motivos para pensar, conversar con ellos y evaluar diferentes perspectivas. No me siento cómodo dando órdenes ni prescribiendo modelos de vida. Prefiero sugerir caminos y que cada quien decida por dónde ir.

Greetings. I accept the kind invitation of my dear friend Hive account@miriannalis to give answers to some questions that arose from the excellent publication of my friend Hive account@yadimelgar.

Ever since I was a teenager, it began to strike me why the vast majority of people found it difficult to take the initiative. I saw that a lot where I lived. It was an area that was being consolidated, in a popular neighborhood in the West of Caracas, and where there were many issues to be resolved, most of them related to the need to establish some minimum standards for coexistence and, above all, to solve problems in basic services such as water, electricity and sewage.

The problems were there, they could go on for a long time and still people went about their business as if nothing had happened. If someone did not appear, from inside or outside, to start an awareness campaign and assume the great commitment to begin to take action, the rest did not mobilize.

That observation when I was a boy made me reach a conclusion that at first was intuitive, but later I was confirmed by my studies: humans need someone to show us the way, it is what we call a leader.

When I began my university studies at the Pedagogical University of Caracas, in the early seventies, the academic environment of our institution was dominated by a doctrine created by the great educator and political leader "Luis Beltrán Prieto Figueroa", collected in a work of his called: "The Teacher as Leader".

All my teachers made common cause to reinforce this idea in our training as future teachers, and insisted that we should not see ourselves as mere "lecturers", but that we had the mission to reach the communities to lead processes of all kinds. Those were times when Democracy was consolidating and Public Education was trying to reach all corners of the country.

To guarantee our contribution to the development of the country, the Ministry of Education offered us, upon graduation, a job in some place in the interior of the country, it was not mandatory to take it and many declined it, but others like me accepted it.

When we arrived at the work site, in a town on the border between Aragua and Carabobo, there were only two graduated teachers, the director and myself. The rest of the colleagues were made up of some education students and people from different professions. At that moment I understood what my teachers in Caracas were trying to explain to us, especially about having a clear conscience that we should be an example for others.

So without ever having set out to do so, I suddenly found myself promoting initiatives and ideas among colleagues and student representatives. For some I was prepared, for others I was not. But people trusted that I had the capacity to be able to guide them appropriately. In some ways and on a relatively small scale during that time I exercised many leadership roles. A process that continued throughout my working life as a high school and university teacher.

I now move on to comment on the generative questions that friend Hive account@miriannalis leaves us on the subject...

In what area have you influenced by your example?

The area in which I can best specify some influence is in the area of teacher training. For many years I was a teacher of students who were being trained at the Pedagógico. Many of those with whom I have maintained contact over time tell me that they have followed my pedagogical model, based mainly on stimulating the imagination of young people so that they are able to develop critical thinking.

There is another influence that is not easy to pinpoint. Some of my former students who became professionals in other areas such as medicine, engineering or law, tell me that one of the valuable things they took away from our school experience was to value the importance of reading for their personal growth. They fondly recall how many of the texts we read in one course or another opened up new perspectives on life.

What is it that makes you unique?

I couldn't say that any quality of mine is unique. But one of the things that makes me unique is the firm belief that we can all be better every day.

What is your greatest strength?

Perseverance. Thank God I have great discipline and willpower. It is not hard for me to work with effort and dedication to achieve my goals, especially if they are related to the well-being of my body and mind. If I should not consume some food I have no problem to say goodbye, if I have to include some exercise routine, I do it. Somehow I have also been making progress in letting go of those things that do not depend on me.

How do you exert a positive influence on others?

I try as much as possible not to impose but rather to show. I like to give people food for thought, talk to them and evaluate different perspectives. I don't feel comfortable giving orders or prescribing life models. I prefer to suggest paths and let each person decide where to go.
