Saludos hivers. Las muñecas son uno de los juguetes más populares alrededor del mundo. Su origen exacto es incierto pero se sabe que desde la antigüedad las personas usaban su creatividad para divertir a los niños y una muestra de ello son las muñecas que han encontrado los arqueólogos en excavaciones realizadas en el antiguo Egipto así como en la Grecia clásica y en la época de los romanos. Los materiales más utilizados eran madera, marfil, barro y yeso.

Greetings hivers. Dolls are one of the most popular toys around the world. Its exact origin is uncertain but it's known that since ancient times people used their creativity to entertain children and an example of this are the dolls that archaeologists have found in excavations carried out in ancient Egypt as well as in classical Greece and in the time of the Romans. The most used materials were wood, ivory, clay and plaster.

Las muñecas, al igual que sucede con casi todo, fueron evolucionando, no solo en forma y tamaño sino también en los materiales que utilizaban para elaborarlas, entre ellos, la cerámica, telas y el plástico. Debido a su accesibilidad y fácil elaboración, los trapos y las telas se convirtieron en la manera más sencilla para hacer muñecas ya que con algunos retazos y un poquito de hilo, cualquiera podía crear una muñeca para entretener a los niños.

Dolls, as happens with almost everything, evolved, not only in shape and size but also in the materials used to make them, including ceramics, fabrics and plastic. Due to their accessibility and easy production, rags and fabrics became the easiest way to make dolls since with a few scraps and a little thread, anyone could create a doll to entertain children.

Las muñecas de trapo son realmente populares en todo el mundo y si bien surgieron como creaciones artesanales hechas a mano en casa, las hay también que se convirtieron en productos de fabrica hechos en masa.

Rag dolls are really popular all over the world and although they emerged as artisanal creations made by hand at home, there are also those that became mass-made factory products.

El mes pasado se inauguró en mi ciudad la primera exposición festival de muñecas de trapo. La misma, busca en primer lugar conmemorar los 69 años de la muerte del maestro Armando Reverón (1889-1954), uno de los más famosos artistas plásticos del siglo XX en América latina y precursor del arte povera, en segundo lugar, rendirle homenaje a Juanita Flores de Quintero, muñequera de este municipio y por último, dar a conocer al público el arte de la muñequería.

Last month the first rag doll festival exhibition opened in my city. It has several goals, firstly, to commemorate the 69 years since the death of maestro Armando Reverón (1889-1954), one of the most famous visual artists of the 20th century in Latin America and a precursor of Arte Povera, and secondly, to pay tribute to Juanita Flores de Quintero, doll maker from this municipality and finally, make the art of doll making known to the public.

Esta exposición se encuentra en la galería de arte de la Casa-Museo de Mariño, sede de la fundación de cultura de La Victoria (municipio José Félix Ribas), la inauguración se realizó el 8 de septiembre y estará abierta hasta el 6 de octubre.

This exhibition is located in the art gallery of the Mariño House-Museum, headquarters of the La Victoria cultural foundation (José Félix Ribas municipality), the inauguration took place on September 8 and will be open until October 6.

Si bien la exposición rinde homenaje a Juanita Flores de Quintero, y en ella podemos ver algunas de sus muñecas, en total hay más de 270 muñecas que recopilan el trabajo de muñequeras de todo el estado Aragua y el centro del país. Las técnicas de elaboración son variadas y van desde las muñecas hechas con tela, trapos e hilos hasta otras realizadas en crochet.

Although the exhibition pays tribute to Juanita Flores de Quintero, and in it we can see some of her dolls, in total there are more than 270 dolls that compile the work of doll makers from all over the state of Aragua and the center of Venezuela. The production techniques are varied and range from dolls made with fabric, rags and threads to others made with crochet.

El evento empezó con una representación teatral. Detrás del repetitivo sonido de una maraca, apareció un actor interpretando al pintor Armando Reverón con un monólogo. Su presencia en esta exposición se debe a que Reverón creaba muñecas de tamaño natural y detalles muy humanos con las que hacía escenas teatrales.

The event began with a theatrical performance. Behind the repetitive sound of a maraca, an actor appeared playing the painter Armando Reverón with a monologue. Its presence in this exhibition is due to the fact that Reverón created life-size dolls with very human details with which he created theatrical scenes.

Luego de esta representación teatral, el director de cultura dio una corta introducción y saludó a los presentes para posteriormente darle la palabra a los familiares de la homenajeada, quienes siguen con esta hermosa tradicion artesanal de las muñecas de trapo.

After this theatrical performance, the culture director gave a short introduction and greeted those present and then gave the floor to the honoree's family, who continue this beautiful artisanal tradition of rag dolls.

What a fortune to have in your little hands a rag doll with a beautiful story.
They are conceived by African women who were enslaved and taken far from their homes to other lands against their will.
They were forced to work like their children but without the right to play.
These mothers secretly created a simple but very cute cloth doll, it was made with ties on the neck, arms and ankles to identify the body parts.
They are little cuties without eyes or mouth because they didn't have strands of thread or needle.
She wants you to love her with the same love that other girls gave her and give her a name.

El día de la inauguración había mucha gente así que no pude hacer muchas fotos, sin embargo, volví a ir el viernes pasado en la mañana y pude fotografiar con toda la calma del mundo y a mi antojo la sala y las muñecas 😃 / On the opening day there were a lot of people so I couldn't take many photos, however, I went again last Friday morning and I was able to calmly photograph the room and the dolls 😃

Confieso que, a excepción de la Barbie, que me encantaba y me sigue gustando, nunca me gustó jugar con los otros tipos de muñecas cuando era pequeña jajaja. Con el tiempo, he conocido a varias muñequeras que me han hablado y mostrado parte del proceso creativo para darle vida a cada muñeca y me parece algo maravilloso.

I must confess that, except for Barbie, which I loved and still love, I never liked playing with other types of dolls when I was a child hahaha. Over time, I have met several dollmakers who have talked to me and shown me part of the creative process to bring each doll to life and I think it's a wonderful thing.

No sabía que había tantas muñequeras en mi ciudad y en toda Venezuela y tampoco conozco a ninguna de las que están en la exhibición. Me parece increíble y muy positivo que este lindo arte de crear muñecas siga vigente y pasando de generación en generación porque cada una de estas piezas es única y está hecha con mucho amor.

I didn't know there were so many dollmakers in my city and throughout Venezuela and I don't know any of the ones in the exhibition either. I find it incredible and very positive that this beautiful art of creating dolls is still valid and passed from generation to generation because each of these pieces is unique and made with a lot of love.
