Debo de estar en uno de mis "períodos profundamente monocromáticos" pues comencé a hurgar en mis archivos en busca de algunos retratos recientes y con la intención de editarlos a pleno color. Pero en realidad no sé como terminé con varias fotos de niños y todas procesadas en blanco y negro.

I must be in one of my "deep monochrome periods" because I started digging through my archives looking for some recent portraits and with the intention of editing them in full colour. But I don't really know how I ended up with several photos of children and all processed in black and white.

Después de un rato seleccionando fotografías, me percaté de que la mayoría de ellos tenían que ver con chicos en las calles o en retratos puntuales, así que basado en eso fue como decidí la temática de esta publicación.

After a while of selecting photographs, I realised that most of them had to do with boys in the streets or in one-off portraits, so based on that I decided on the theme of this publication.

Los niños son siempre algo íntimamente ligado a la fotografía. Esto sucede muy especialmente cuando queremos experimentar el carácter emotivo de la fotografía y también (como en mi caso) hacer fotos cuya espontaneidad sea muy marcada. ¿Acaso puede haber algo más espontaneo que un niño?

Children are always intimately connected with photography. This is especially true when we want to experience the emotional character of photography and also (as in my case) to take photos whose spontaneity is very marked. What could be more spontaneous than a child?

A pesar de ser un tipo particularmente "desmemoriado" tengo muchos recuerdos de mi niñez conmigo, en especial cuando se trata de cosas que sucedían en estas calles en donde suelo deambular haciendo fotos, pues siendo un chico yo solía pasar buena parte de las tardes en las calles de mi vecindario, dado que asistía a la escuela en las mañanas.

Despite being a particularly "forgetful" guy I have many memories of my childhood with me, especially when it comes to things that happened in these streets where I often wander around taking pictures, because as a kid I used to spend a good part of my afternoons in the streets of my neighbourhood, since I attended school in the mornings.

Así que, me sucede con frecuencia, el mirarme a mi mismo en las calles cuando tengo la oportunidad de hacer fotografías de los chicos que andan en ellas. Caray... Eran tiempos felices según recuerdo, con muy pocas preocupaciones y siempre algo divertido para hacer la mayoría de las veces.

So, it often happens to me, to look at myself on the streets when I have the opportunity to take pictures of the guys walking on the streets. Gee... Those were happy times as I remember, with very few worries and always something fun to do most of the time.

Esto me hace cavilar al respecto, pues no siempre las fotos que hago en las calles expresan algo ameno y feliz. No, por el contrario, muchas veces reflejan con cierta crudeza las diferencias que podemos observar en las vidas de unos y otros. Y esto, obviamente, también aplica a los niños.

This makes me think about it, because the photos I take on the streets do not always express something pleasant and happy. No, on the contrary, they often reflect with a certain crudeness the differences that we can observe in each other's lives. And this obviously also applies to children.

Pero, de la manera que sea, la fotografía también es eso: Diversidad, disparidad, diferencias, contrastes y otras cosas las cuales nos hacen pensar profundamente. Entonces, quizás estas fotos tienen algo de eso y pueden servir a ustedes para experimentar pensamientos afines a los que yo experimento cuando las tomo.

But, in whatever way, photography is also that: Diversity, disparity, differences, contrasts and other things which make us think deeply. So, maybe these photos have some of that and can help you to experience thoughts similar to the ones I experience when I take them.
