Hello #Hive friends!... Here in my region (Montalbán, Carabobo, Venezuela) the rainy season has reached its last days and we have only had a few sporadic showers which seem to be the last gasps of a not so good rainy period in 2023. However, the insect populations in the forests and grasslands around the town seem to be making a last hot effort to preserve their species and this means that the diversity is high and the numbers of specimens to photograph are also high.

Aquí en mi región (Montalbán, Carabobo, Venezuela) las temporada de lluvias ha llegado a sus últimos días y tan solo hemos tenido algunos aguaceros esporádicos los cuales semejan últimos estertores de de un periodo lluvioso no muy bueno en este 2023. Sin embargo, las poblaciones de insectos en los bosques y pastizales alrededor del pueblo paren estar haciendo un último y caliente esfuerzo por preservar sus especies y esto hace que la diversidad sea alta y las cantidades de especímenes para fotografiar también.

Dragonflies, butterflies, flies and even some rare ants appear everywhere in the surrounding vegetation, whose foliage is beginning to show traces of ochre and yellow, betraying the decrease in humidity in the environment. They all seem to be healthy individuals in the reproductive phase, which suggests that we are in the middle of the last reproductive cycle of the season and that within a few days the last wave of new individuals will appear in smaller numbers, some destined to conserve the presence of the species in the dry season and others close to making small migrations to areas where the climatic conditions and the presence of bodies of water remain at a sufficient level to complete their next cycles.

Libélulas, mariposas, moscas y hasta algunas hormigas poco comunes, aparecen por doquier en los alrededores repletos de vegetación cuyo follaje comienza a tener trazos de color ocre y amarillo delatando la disminución de la humedad en el ambiente. Todos parecen ser individuos sanos y en fase reproductiva, lo que hace pensar que estamos en mitad del ultimo ciclo reproductivo de la temporada y que dentro de algunos días aparecerá la ultima oleada de individuos nuevos en cantidades menores, destinados unos a conservar presencia de la especie en temporada seca y otros próximos a realizar pequeñas migraciones hacia áreas en donde las condiciones climáticas y presencia de cuerpos acuáticos se mantenga en un nivel suficiente para completar sus venideros ciclos.

For these photos I used my camera in semi-automatic aperture (P) mode with my old 100 mm macro lens. Given the favourable lighting conditions (bright sunshine and time of day close to midday) I could opt for a fixed ISO of 500 and just played with the apertures within a not very wide range of values. The exposure compensation was also easy to decide, going from -0.0EV to -0.7EV (full frame evaluation) depending on the location of the photographed insect and the angle of incidence of the light on it.

Para estas fotos usé mi cámara en modo semi-automático de apertura (P) con mi viejo lente para macros de 100 mm. Dadas las favorables condiciones lumínicas (sol radiante y horario cercano al mediodía) pude optar por un ISO fijo en 500 y tan solo me limité a jugar con las aperturas dentro de un rango no muy amplio de valores. La compensación de la exposición también fue algo fácil de decidir, yendo desde -0.0EV a -0.7EV (Evaluación de fotograma completo) dependiendo de la locación del insecto fotografiado y del angulo de incidencia de la luz en este.

The focusing method was single centre-point autofocus (non-dynamic)... I was an assiduous practitioner of macro photography more than 15 years ago and back then I used to use manual focus and even flash to photograph insects. But at this stage of my life (53 years old) my vision is not the same and also my ability to hold the camera freehand has declined as expected. However, one of the beautiful things about photography is that it teaches us how to "reinvent" ourselves in every adverse situation. So now I do macros and close-ups with natural light, wide apertures and higher ISO. They are "more romantic" macros (I like to say that) as they sacrifice part of the detailed view of the insect in favour of providing the eloquence typical of focused foregrouds and blurred backgrounds that I like to see so much now.

El método de enfoque fue automático de único punto central (no dinámico)... Yo fui un asiduo practicante de fotografía macro hace más de 15 años atrás y en aquel entonces solía usar enfoque manual e incluso flash para fotografiar insectos. Pero a estas alturas de mi vida (53 años) ya mi visión no es la misma y también mi habilidad para sostener la cámara a mano alzada ha mermado como era de esperarse. Sin embargo, entre las cosas hermosas que tiene la fotografía, esta el enseñarnos como "reinventarnos" ante cada situación adversa. Así que ahora hago macros y close-ups con luz natural, aperturas focales amplias e ISO más alto. Son macros "más románticos" (me gusta decir eso) pues sacrifican parte de la visión detallada del insecto en pro de brindar la elocuencia típica de los primeros planos enfocados y los fondos difusos que tanto me gusta ver ahora.

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.}
