The area was first settled by an adventurous group from England led by Barnabus Horton in 1640.
The deep water harbor was first called Winter Harbor and later Stirling, named after George Washington’s General, Lord Sterling.
The harbor wharf was busy with ships bound for South America and the Caribbean during the Revolutionary War era.
Later the named changed to Greenhill and finally renamed Greenport when the village was incorporated as part of Southold Town in 1838.
