This weekend I was invited to an estate sale. A friend of my mother’s is moving into a new home. She had some very beautiful vintage glassware for sale. I’m not a glass collector like my mom. We just don’t have the space to display a lot of those types of items. My husband is far more attracted to knickknacks than I am. But once in awhile I’m drawn to a piece and just can’t look away. The way the sunlight picked up the colors in this vintage egg platter made it impossible to look away. I hadn’t planned on buying anything at all, since I try not to bring in too many collectibles, as I mentioned previously.
But it was just too lovely. I didn’t worry about googling any information on this platter before buying it. I knew it was hobnail Carnival glass, and the price was fair. And I knew I wanted it. From what I’ve been able to find out about it online, it was produced by the Indiana Glass Company in the 1970s. The Seventies is a decade in which I generally pass over. I’m most attracted to items predating Midcentury. But every once in awhile something from a later time period sneaks its way in.
Since Carnival glass does not contain lead, and is considered safe for use, I’ll make at least one batch of deviled eggs for photos, and to eat of course, then place the platter on a stand for display only.
