Hi guys!
This article is about how I built my water deck, why did I make the choices I made and how to use different combinations within the water splinter. This is also my entry to Splinterlands social media challenge. So hope you enjoy - it's all about the magic!
Core
I started playing during the Untamed pack sale and a little investment in mind I wanted to get my hands on some older cards as well.
Mischievous Mermaid was relatively cheap and 2 magic was a big thing since I was really struggling with armored monsters. With this card I started to get few wins and therefore began to enjoy the game much more!
Alric Stormbringer is by far the best trade I've made with Splinterlands - only few dollars back then and now the old man is trading at above 50$. Best thing is that with +1 magic buff he made my little mermaid even more deadlier.
Now with these two and Ice Pixie I began to win more and more battles and the core of my water magic deck was starting to take form.
Adding some abilities
Still excited about Alrics magic buff I began to search for more water magic monsters, you know, just to maximize the damage.
Coral Wraith is not just about that. With it's sneak ability it will take out healers and all sorts of other nasty creatures lurking back there. Still an essential part of my team, especially in those lower mana battles.
Sea Genie is a bit expensive card when it comes to mana but I still use it on special occasions, mainly with earthquake ruleset because of his flying ability.
Tanks
I think that the role of these cards is not so much of making damage but rather to play time in front line. Just enough for my back line monsters to take out opponents tank and maybe other monsters too.
Kelp Initiate is the one I use for low mana battles. Costing only 2 mana, having 6 health and being pretty fast, Kelp can really win some valuable time for you.
Torhilo the Frozen on the other hand is very slow but also very well protected. This bull is my number one choice for those high mana battles. Torhilo is good against melee/ranged but also an excellent choice against other magic teams because of it's void ability.
Specialists
Venari Wavesmith is very, very useful against melee and ranged teams and that's because of her protect ability. It's like she's taking care of the whole family! Here is one of my favorite combos for ~20 mana battles: Alric(3), Kelp(2), Mermaid(5), Wavesmith(5), Coral Wraith(4) and Creeping Ooze(1). Armored Kelp can now take even more hit and Coral Wraith(with only 2 health) has a second chance against enemy snipers. Here's Venari Wavesmith playing a crucial part in battle: Venari Wavesmith in action.
Captain's Ghost is an option against teams with healer(s) or a healing summoner. To be honest, I bought this card because of that +2 magic but Affliction ability has really saved me couple of times against those ever healing tanks. I usually replace Coral Wraith with this one in high mana battles.
More power
Speaking of the high mana battles, these two are like on steroids when combined with Alric Stormbringer.
Nerissa Tridawn brings that 3 magic attack(4 with Alric) and 9 health to a battle. Maybe not so much of a tank, but more of a third line card allowing you to enjoy her powerful attacks for a longer time. Higher mana battle card that works well with Poison ruleset also.
Djinn Oshannus was really annoying when I first encountered him. That's because he rug pulled almost everything I've written above. Solution? Buy him. I see many players use him as a first line tank but I prefer to put him behind Kelp in low mana battles and behind Torhilo in high mana battles. Because of void ability both Torhilo and Oshannus are really well protected against other magic teams and form a strong defence together.
Some more options
Lobstradamus has a shield ability and is a useful as tank against melee or ranged but also serves well as a last line monster against sneak. When I'm against other magic users I sometimes replace him with Prismatic Energy.
River Hellondale is my newest asset. It didn't take me that many battles to notice the huge potential this card has. And also what kind of impact it would have on my already pretty strong water deck. For example: your melee/ranged opponent has used quite a few attacks to destroy the shield of Torhilo and now has finally drained it's health too. With resurrect ability River Hellondale then brings poor Torhilo back to life. Although resurrected monster only has 1 health, in Torhilos case he comes back in front with full armor(4). At this point I'd be really frustrated!
Here is an example of blast -ruleset battle where Kelp comes back life. Also notice how well Oshannus works behind the tank absorbing those hits: Kelp resurrected.
Final thoughts
Other useful cards that can be mixed in:
- River Nymph - low mana with cleanse
- Merdaali Guardian - tank healer which I'm sometimes using with Oshannus and Wavesmith
- Torrent Fiend - for a greater good
- Magi of Chaos - 2 base magic
- All the melee and ranged water cards - Serpent of Eld is still a very good tank card!
Thank you for reading!
And even if you you are not a big fan of water splinter, I still hope you found this somewhat inspirational.
