With less than 3 days away from all chaos breaks loose (see what I did there?), I thought I'd give you a little speculation on what I think would be the cards to get, or the cards that will create the most impact when Chaos Legion drops.
Before that though, let's make a few assumptions:
- The top 3 cards I will be judging are strictly based on the level 1 face value given at the moment, which means the card stats are subject to change and we're only getting one copy of the card.
- Judgement will be made based on its synergy and use with the Modern League (non-Alpha and non-Beta cards).
- Summoners are not included, as all summoners at Level 1 I think are worth it to get, especially if you're looking to play only in Bronze / Silver.
- We'll only focus on Common and Rare cards, as the Epics and Legendary cards will be, well, epic and legendary (read: expensive but worth it).
With that, let's get it on!
Fire
TENYII STRIKER
- 2 damage Sneak attacker with 5 Speed AND Health? Ridiculous. You can put it in the front or the back and it'll do its job.
RADIATED BRUTE
- 3 damage at level 1 with Reach, means it's protected and a good support to the front tank. It's a little squishy and it won't do so well against Blast ability, but can hit hard if it survives.
SCAVO CHEMIST
- EASY anti-Wavesmith. At 2 mana, its utility can easily be fit into any lineup to get rid of the pesky armor.
Water
DIEMONSHARK
- LEVEL 1 TRAMPLE. If you don't know why this is valuable, you have not experienced what a Stampede Ruleset can do.
FLYING SQUID
- Essentially the Water Splinter's Fineas Rage. Solid damage with reach, gets faster and can easily get more protection with Wavesmith and Kelya.
DEEP LURKER
- Opportunity cards are always good, and this looks like a good fit for a Melee Water team. The Speed stat is less that ideal, but Kelya can buff it up a bit, OR it can also be a good option for Reverse Speed rulesets.
Earth
VENARI KNIFER
- Level 1 Thorns, 4 speed and high health for ONLY 6 MANA, and it's a common. This will definitely see a lot of play.
MYCELIC SLIPSPAWN
- Finally, an Earth card with Taunt. Not only that, its magic damage means putting it anywhere in the back line will split the opponents damage between it and your tank. Plus synergy with the new Earth Summoner. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! Immunity at level 1 means it's protected against Poison! What an amazing card.
REGAL PERYTON
- Good synergy with the Earth summoner, and it's a great position 2 monster. The Flying and the high natural Speed helps it dodge a lot of attacks. Also possible option at the last position to protect against Sneak.
Life
CELESTIAL HARPY
- Opportunity for 2 mana (you can fit this is almost any lineup), Flying for dodge chance = a nicely upgraded Battering Ram for the Life Splinter.
CHAOS KNIGHT
- Think of it as a budget Harklaw, but for Life. At Level 1 this one would be a tank to pick for sure.
TIME MAGE
- It might not immediately look like much, but any card that has magic damage under 4 mana is a good pick in my book. Also the 5 speed will ensure a hit, a the Slow ability can help her dodge some non-magic attacks.
Death
CURSED WINDEKU
- Another thorns monster at Level 1, but this time for death. Definitely gonna be a good tank, especially with the 10 HP and 3 speed. Death is still lacking a backline heal for sustain, BUT THIS GUY GETS IS AT LEVEL 4 (max Silver).
SILENT SHA-VI
- It's a powerful Sneak monster at 3 Speed, think if Undead Badger and Skeleton Assassin had a baby.
RIFTWING
- I love this card because of the innate Scavenge and the high dodge chance it has because of its speed and Flying. It's also at 4 mana, so if you get a Little League / Noxious Fumes ruleset, this is gonna be a great option for Death.
Neutral
SCAVO HIRELING
- Level 1 repair on a neutral card. Bonus if you level him up (as a common) to Silver League, he gets Triage. This just has SO. MANY. APPLICATIONS. (I won't be spoiling strategies yet...)
XENITH MONK
- You would definitely want to be able to play this card at Level 2, because of the Heal. Since it's at 4 mana, it's also a definitely good option for Little League.
VENARI SPELLSMITH
- First card that has Level 1 Amplify. Great to combo with Mylor, Owster, Lir, even if it only has 1 HP.
FINAL THOUGHTS
For those on a tight budget, I really think these cards would change a lot of the gameplay in the current meta (at least until Modern League is solidified and the starter cards get rotated out).
If I had the money though, I'd definitely buy up all the summoners and max them!
But I'm not, which is why I hope this strategy guide helps you realize some of the potential.
All the card stats are still subject to change of course, and I really can't wait until December 8th to start opening packs and play with new cards!
Let me know in the comments what cards you think are good, and what you think about my choices!
Good luck, and may your rewards chests always contain gold foil legendaries.
