One of the recent things that has been added to the game is the ability to burn SPS for Glint, SPS being the main reward token, and Glint being the token used to purchase items in the Glint shop, such as reward cards and card skins. Before, the only way to acquire Glint was through battles, but with all the new stuff that is being sold at the Glint shop and the increase in price for the card draws and loot chests, the demand for Glint has been at its highest. But while that was the case, was it reasonable to burn SPS for Glint?
I like to share some of my thoughts in this post.
Burning SPS for Glint
Before I go through with my thoughts, I want to first explain what the difference is between SPS and Glint.
SPS or Splintershards is the official governance token for Splinterlands. Aside from being the rewards given when winning battles, players can also use this token to vote on important decisions about the game. On occasions, players can also use SPS to purchase certain card sets directly, such as the recent Escalation mini-set, without the need of converting it to other tokens.
On the other hand, Glint is a soulbound token that is primarily used to purchase items in the Glint shop, such as cards, skins, and other consumables. Since it is soulbound, players cannot transfer, trade, or convert this token into any other token, and unless used, it will remain in your account forever.
To burn SPS for Glint, you only need to go to the rewards tab in the lobby page of the game and right beside your estimated Glint per win. Then you just need to toggle the button to on, and after that, there will be a hive keychain popup that will ask you whether you are giving permission to the transaction. Just Ok that and play the game.
Once you win a match, the SPS that you were supposed to earn will be automatically burned, and that will then boost the amount of Glint that you win in the battle instead.
I tried to play a match with the SPS burning mechanism on and while it was turned off to see the difference.
On my last battle where the burning mechanism is turned off, I get 1288 Glint with 18.506 SPS. Meanwhile, on the battle where I turned on the burning mechanism, I get 1,979 Glint and 14 SPS. That was not even a 700 Glint increase for burning governance tokens, though the older battle has used more promo cards than the last one.
That was quite low of an increase on Glint in my opinion for burning a governance token, but I believe that the Glint distributed in the game per season is fixed and was distributed based on the players participation, so it means that they were just getting a bigger share in the same Glint pool that will eventually gets lower and lower as the season comes to the end. Given that, I think that it needs to have more incentive for the players that burn their rewards aside from just getting more Glint.
It can be an exclusive card that can only be acquired by burning a certain amount of SPS, similar to the mechanics of getting Lucky Longshot, or it can also be some kind of skin.
I remember that about half a year ago, they also teased the idea of Glamour which are skins that not just cosmetic but will also give additional benefits to the card. I'm not sure what is the progress on this or if this concept was still being worked on. But if it is, I think that it can be a better alternative than just giving more cards that players will still give players reason to burn their SPS for Glint.
Closing
Right now, the only other perks of burning SPS for Glint is to get a spot on the Reward Burn Leaderbord, but aside of that, there is really nothing else. I think the players that were burning SPS plays an important role in reducing the supply of SPS with very little upside to them, so it is on the team to find a way to properly incentivize them and find more reason to convince other players to burn SPS too.
Thank you, and see you on the next post!
