Hey friends. This is @SumatraNate. I have started a new Splinterlands focused project that I am calling @SplinterSage. I will be posting my @Pallas-Gull battles on this account moving forward. Stay tuned for updates about the project!

Battle #1 - Rulesets: Heavy Hitters and Close Range
My Team | Level | Opposing Team | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summoner: Kelya Frendul | 4 | Summoner: Thadius Brood | 2 |
| Sea Monster | 5 | Chain Golem | 1 |
| Flying Squid | 3 | Silent Sha-vi | 3 |
| Cornealus | 1 | Cthulhu | 1 |
| Kulu Swimhunter | 3 | Life Sapper | 1 |
| Naga Windmaster | 3 | Ancient Lich | 1 |
| Poseidon | 1 | Phantom Soldier | 1 |
Kelya Frendul provides an extra level of shield protection, unless your opponent is heavy on magic attack (which was the case for this battle). Although I had diminishing return on shield, Kelya gave me an upper hand by increasing my monsters' speed of attack.
Sea Monster is a great tank card because of healing power and strong melee attack (5 attack at level 5). Add in the Flying Squid's reach ability and you have a strong 1-2 punch.
With the Close Range ruleset in play, all range attack monsters were able to attack from the first position. Cornealus was selected for the third position in order to heal after attacks. Sometimes the goal of a monster is to outlast your opponent.
For me, card #4 and card #5 are usually selected last. These cards usually complete/compliment the strategy I started building when I selected cards #1, #2, and #6. With a decreasing amount of available manna, Kulu Swimhunter was selected. Kulu as a solid card - nothing flashing, just built tough and a decent amount of attack. Naga Windmaster's debuff did not serve my team well as my opponent did not have any ranged monsters.
Poseidon, in last position with shield, outlasted my opponent's sneak attack.
Overall, I was pleased with my strategy. I alway enjoy a victory!
When is it best to use Kulu Swimhunter?
For me, Kulu Smithhunter is not a card I develop a strategy around. These squid-like creatures are vicious, but there are not usually the stars of the show.
Don't get me wrong. Kulu adds a lot of value, especially ...
- when the manna cap is low
- when playing the Little League ruleset
- and when playing any ruleset that favors ranged attacks, like Close Range and Target Practice
