The release of Escalation packs has really changed gameplay in Splinterlands. Many of these new cards are almost a necessity it you want to remain competitive, especially in the Modern format. I have been picking up new monsters almost weekly finding a new one that I really think will help me out in my game. One of these cards was Phlegmost that I bought mainly because it has Reprisal which automatically labels an enemy card with taunt if has a successful attack over five on any of it's teammates. However, after that it kind of faded into the background and I didn't use it very much...
That all changed this week. I was thinking about selling it off as I wasn't getting much use out if the card. Then I looked at the stats and realized I had really been missing out on one powerful ability, Weaken. This decreases the health of all of the opponent's monsters by one unit, it the ruleset of Anemia, that can be devastating. Even in regular rulesets one less health to contend with is a good thing and make winning just a little bit easier! So I took my earnings from recent card sales and bought up to level five.
You will notice that I bought a gold foil copy of this card. Why? Simple, for some reason it was less expensive to buy up to level five in gold that regular foil. I've seen that quite a few times in Escalation cards, I'm not sure if I have just gotten lucky on purchase timing or if they tend to run less overall? I'm not sure, anyone else noticed that?
Let's have a detailed look at this nasty beast!
From level one it comes with Fury doing double damage to any taunt monsters. At level three it picks up a really nice ability in Reprisal, as I mentioned earlier, essentially flagging an opponent's monster with taunt if it attacks with more than five power. At level five it picks up the one I talked about today, Weaken decreasing all opponent's cards health by one. At level eight it picks up an extra magic attack and finally at level ten it picks up Heal. It recovers one third of it's health each round rounded down. However, unless your playing in Diamond or Champion you probably won't ever be able to use those! They are really nice additions though!
Also I did move up into a new league, I almost forgot to mention it. But it's always fun moving up the ranks!
Time to see this bad boy in action making use of it's new Weaken ability to help me get a win!
Lets' dive right on into a battle from this morning!
You can see the entire battle at this link here.
First off, this is a battle in Modern with a mana cap of 58 which isn't too bad. The rulesets are High Five meaning you only get five team members and Arcane Dampening which decreases your magic attacks by fifty percent rounded up. This is a screenshot after the buffs have been applied but before the action has commenced.
For my archon I chose Marlai Singariel which grants each magical monster on my team one additional magic attack unit. Fist up I placed Wailsworn Specter because on defeat her Bloodline Tribue ability will activate (to all undead cards) strengthening the following three monsters on the team as they are all undead or have Shapeshift. My tank was Blue Wyrm Travesty which is an undead followed by another undead Mindless Thrall. I then placed Portia Nyr which has Shapeshift allowing her to respond to Bloodline Tribute of any type. And last up, the star of today's show, Phlegmost.
My opponent used the archon Incessant Sage granting one additional armor unit to each of it's team members. For a tank they went with a favorite of mine, Saltwraith Bulkhead, followed by Janni Rebel. This was then followed with a Vengeful Monk and another of my favorites Olivia Of The Brook. However, I was lucky she is only a level one, at level two she can become a serious problem. And to round things off they went with A'lan Musketeer with Double Strike on those ranged attacks.
Nearly right away my Wailsworn Specter is taken out by Saltwraith Bulkhead. Since his attack was over five in power it activated Reprisal from Phlegmost attaching a taunt to the card so he will be the main focus of attack.
And the defeat also increased the health, speed, and attack of my next three monsters due to Bloodline Tribute.
Here Phlegmost earns is keep by taking out the opponent's tank flagged with taunt.
By round two here is how things stand.
And by round three the opponent took out my Mindless Thrall but only have three cards left, with the last one being a ranged attacker. It's starting to look good!
Phlegmost once again earns it's keep taking out Olivia and sealing the opponent team's fate.
Phlegmost once again delivers the final death blow in the match, although since it is a ranged attacker it was unable to attack from first position. Good game to my opponent!
This match really demonstrates the power Phlegmost at level five. The Weaken, Reprisal, and Fury all really came in handy. It's a great card that I really don't use enough, I'll have to make a point to add it to my rotation more often in the future!
