Brent held the vials up in front of his face and looked close at them then slid them into his coat pocket, “thanks for this. I’ll let Ferd know how helpful you’ve been.”
“Thanks Mr. Monroe. It was actually a fun challenge.”
“I’ve got to get back to this case but again, thanks,” Brent said as he stood, the door to the office opened as one of the lab workers entered.
He walked past the worker with a nod then down the hall to his office. He swung the door open and before he could step through the door he heard a woman, “agent Monroe,” from down the hallway. He turned to see Emma walking briskly towards him and waited for her before walking into his office. She followed and closed the door behind her.
“How’s the chase?” he asked as he motioned to a chair.
She held up her hand, “I’m good. It’s going okay, but a bit slow now.”
Brent pulled the vials from his pocket as he sat in his chair behind his desk then set the vials in the center desk drawer.
“You still have contact with Mount at the FBI?” he asked as his left eyebrow raised.
“It’s been a while but I guess so, why?”
“Seems he is their lead agent on the case and is the one in possession of their full unredacted file. Do you think you could acquire the file for us?”
“You don’t have anyone else that could do this?” she asked as she shifted her weight from foot to foot.
“No one as close to him as you are. You’ve got the best chance given your history with him.”
Emma stared down at Brent in his chair as she ran the request through her head. He watched her eyes change focus then finally return to him, “I’ll give it a try, but it’s been a while since I’ve last done any work for them. I’m not sure I can get in.”
“Do what you can, we need that file.”
“Doesn’t the agency have people inside there?”
“We do but they can’t compromise their cover. You’re the best situated to take care of this.”
Her eyes stayed locked on him as she stood silent for a long pause then begrudgingly replied, “fine. Just know it’s on your hands.”
“What’s that’s supposed to mean?” his head lowered and his eyes narrowed.
“Like you said, I have history with him. I’m just saying you probably should have picked someone else for this task,” her hands held up beside her and eyebrows raised.
“Don’t do anything stupid. You could be walking into the den of ineptitude and they react… different from us,” Brent said with pauses.
“It’s on you so I’m fine with whatever. I’ll let you know what I can come up with. Are you here today or will you be out?”
Brent rubbed his forehead as he thought then said, “I’ve got a meeting or two this afternoon but I should be here.”
Emma’s mouth turned up a corner then she nodded, turned, and walked through the door after opening it. She pulled it closed with a solid thud then walked with purpose down the hallway.
Brent watched her go and shook his head at the slam of the door. He turned his monitor back on and went back to work on his notes on the case.
Today I got a bit of writing done but my mind was on my new dart board which I am so in love with and have put through the paces already. It is super nice and I found my throw. You will see in my tomorrow post. I realized this chapter's flow last night in the REALLY long soak session and now just need to get it out.
