Tesar gave a half smile and tilt of his head, “a little. The door probably costs as much as the windows plus it’s not like we’re hurting for cash. I just needed to teach them a lesson.”
“Right, teacher Tesar,” Praza goaded.
“Stranger things happen,” Tesar replied.
They rode along in silence for a couple minutes then Praza asked, “what time did Zeleny want us to pick him up?”
“He said around eleven, which we’re late,” Tesar said as he looked at his watch.
“If you wouldn’t have had to play teacher we’d be on time.”
“Whatever, it was worth it. We’re not that late just drive and we’ll be there soon enough,” Tesar replied calmly.
The windows let the cool morning air in the car in a swirl and the smells of the city invaded their senses. As they neared the warehouse they could see Zeleny talking with Mishenka the owner of The Brink. Zeleny saw them approach, said something to Mishenka and shook his hand then turned and stood at the curb as Mishenka closed the warehouse door behind him.
“Where the fuck have you two been? You’re late,” Zeleny glared at them as the car stopped. “What the fuck happened to the windows?
Praza pulled up to the curb on the deriver’s side and stopped. As he opened the door to climb out he replied, “maybe ask teacher Tesar, it’s his fault. He had to fuck with people.”
Zeleny shook his head as Tesar got out of the passenger seat and walked around the car. “The little shit asked for it. Scared little bitch tore ass out of the parking lot and sprayed gravel everywhere. The bikers were just as pissed.”
“Whatever, just get in and let’s go. Anika’s headed to Donovan so we have to get there now,” Zeleny demanded.
Praza walked to the passenger side and climbed into the rear seat while Zeleny into the front passenger. Tesar got in and drove them through the city.
“What’d Mishenka say?” Tesar asked as he stared at the road ahead.
Zeleny watched the city pass out the side window for a couple blocks before he said, “he wants the canister out of the country by the weekend.”
Tesar looked over at Zeleny then at Praza in the rear view mirror. His eyes back on the road he sighed and said, “that figures. He better have something lined up.”
“That’s where we’re going now,” Zeleny replied flatly.
The early lunch traffic was starting to fill the streets as they made their way the last few blocks to Donovan Medical Consulting. Tesar had to go around a double parked cab to an open spot where he stopped on the curb and let Zeleny and Praza out and said, “I’ll park in the garage and meet you up front.”
Zeleny nodded and he and Tesar walked slowly to the stairs up to the entrance as Tesar drove around the block to the garage. They waited at the top of the stairs for Tesar to finally come trotting towards them. He slowed to a walk and they went inside the building.
“Damn, look at that rock,” Praza blurted out as they stood staring at the atrium.
“Come on,” Zeleny said with a nod as turned and began walking. He stopped for a moment when he saw a small middle eastern man with Anika’s journal in his hand. He walked over to the man and stopped in front of him.
“Where you get that book?” he demanded in English.
“I was trying to find the woman who left this in my cab. My name is Girish Pedraja, my cab is out front. A woman, she came here, she left this in my cab.” Girish’s legs began trembling and his voice was shaky.
“That my woman book. I take that.” Zeleny barked as he grabbed the book from Girish’s noticeably trembling hands.
Tesar and Praza stopped on either side of Zeleny and where snickering and giggling behind him.
“Shut the fuck up you two,” Zeleny said forcefully before turning back to Girish. “I’m Zeleny, I give this to its owner. I be seeing her shortly.” Zeleny reached his hand out to Girish, “Thank you.”
“You’re… uhm… you’re welcome.” Girish shook his hand and turned on his heel and walked to the exit.
The three watched him hurry off to the exit the Zeleny turned the journal over in his hands then put it in his coat pocket. He walked straight to the main desk, “Doctor Franklin Rose office?” he asked.
The woman behind the desk said quickly, “19th floor, office 413.”
Zeleny lead the way to the elevators where they waited for one to arrive. A nearby set of doors slid open and people filed out. Zeleny looked to the brothers then back to the elevator and walked in. A few more people got in before the doors could shut and they rode to the floor.
They followed the signs on the walls until they were standing in front of Doctor Rose’s office. Zeleny was reaching his hand out for the door when it suddenly swung open and a startled Doctor Rose stood there.
“Can I help you?” the doctor asked through heavy breaths.
“They are with me,” Anika said as she walked to the door and stopped next to Zeleny. “Lucky for you your bosses stepped in.”
The group stepped back from the door and allowed the doctor out then followed him to the elevators then to the Clinical Supervision Ward.
Tesar and Praza stopped at the entrance and Tesar said, “we’ll be back in a couple hours, I don’t think we need to be here for this.”
Zeleny and Anika stopped and Zeleny turned, “okay, just be back here.” They turned and walked through the doors to the ward.
Tesar looked at Praza with raised eyebrows and said, “let’s go to the bar I saw a couple blocks away, I want a beer.”
