Se conoce como maxilar a las piezas óseas que forma parte de la boca en nuestro organismo, dentro del maxilar se podrán apreciar los dientes.
Dentro del área médica existe diversidad en sus nombres, pues se dice que lo adecuado es llamar "maxilar" a solo la parte superior, mientras que la parte inferior debería de ser llamada como "mandíbula". Sin embargo, esto dependerá del criterio individual de cada persona y del conocimiento que este maneje acerca de su nombre.
Los huesos maxilares forman parte de los huesos de la cara, así mismo se debe de saber la importancia entre ambos maxilares al momento de estudiar su anatomía, pues estos son los encargados de diferentes funciones en nuestro organismo.
Ambos maxilares se conforman por un hueso alveolar el cual cumple la función de alojar a los dientes, y poseen a su vez un hueso basal el cual cumple la función de sostener la piel de la cara, además de poder darle forma a nuestra cara en la parte superior.
El maxilar inferior se encarga de permitir que la lengua se aloje en él, así mismo permite que esta se pueda mover de forma libre al momento de hablar y al masticar.
El maxilar superior permite darle forma al suelo de nuestra cavidad nasal, esto a su vez permite que exista la circulación en condición normal del aire que inspiramos.
Por lo general, en un paciente en condiciones sanas los músculos deberán de desarrollarse
