Existe un gran debate sobre si debería de ser España un país monárquico o republicano como antes del golpe de estado que indujo a la Guerra Civil Española en 1936. Esa república se proclamó un día como hoy en 1931. Ese 14 de Abril el Rey Alfonso XIII se exilió y se avaló una nueva Constitución. En ella se cambió la bandera por la tricolor con el color morado.
There is much debate about whether Spain should be a monarchical or republican country as it was before the coup d'état that led to the Spanish Civil War in 1936. That republic was proclaimed on this day in 1931. On that April 14th King Alfonso XIII went into exile and a new Constitution was endorsed. In it the flag was changed to the tricolour with the colour purple.
En un país con unas costumbres religiosas muy marcadas, se quiso quitar poder a la iglesia. Aumentaron las huelgas causadas principalmente por una crisis mundial creando muchos conflictos sangrientos. A todo esto vino unos cambios importantes en el ejército que venía con problemas por las guerras en África. Todo esto hizo que el Golpe de Estado perpetrado por Franco llegase a fraguar.
In a country with very strong religious customs, there was a desire to take power away from the church. There was an increase in strikes, mainly due to the world crisis, which led to many bloody conflicts. All this was accompanied by important changes in the army, which was facing problems due to the wars in Africa. All this led to Franco's coup d'état being forged.
Como resultado de ese conflicto se cometieron atrocidades en todo el país. Las viejas rencillas llegaron a convertirse en venganzas acusando a vecinos de ser contrario al régimen y por ello acabar fusilados.
As a result of this conflict, atrocities were committed all over the country. Old quarrels turned into revenge, with neighbours being accused of being against the regime and therefore being shot.
En los muros del cementerio de la Villa de Los Barrios en Cádiz, junto a un alcornoque como testigo, llegaron a dar muerte a más de una docena de vecinos al principio de la Guerra. Ese cementerio ya no existe como tampoco su muro. Pero el viejo árbol sigue en pie, aun fuerte después de tantos años.
In the walls of the cemetery of the village of Los Barrios in Cádiz, next to a cork oak tree as a witness, more than a dozen neighbours were killed at the beginning of the war. That cemetery no longer exists, nor does its wall. But the old tree is still standing, still strong after so many years.
Sobrevivió al crecimiento inmobiliario que lo quiso eliminar pero gracias a algunos vecinos que se encadenaron a él. Para que no quede todo en el olvido se puso un monolito con la bandera de esa República del 14 de Abril de 1931.
It survived the real estate development that wanted to eliminate it, but thanks to some neighbours who chained themselves to it. So that it would not be forgotten, a monolith with the flag of the Republic of April 14th 1931 was placed there.
