¿Qué es el suero antiofídico?

Esta es la pregunta que debemos responder en primer lugar. El suero antiodídico es una sustancia biológicamente procesada cuya finalidad es la de contrarrestar el veneno inoculado a través de mordeduras de ofidios, es decir, serpientes, pero incluso es eficaz contra venenos de especies como alacranes o arañas. Este antídoto puede clasificarse en dos grupos: Monovalente, el cuál contraresta solo una clase de veneno, y polivalente que como su nombre lo indica, es capaz de cortar el efecto de varias clases de veneno.

Antivenom serum is a biologically processed substance whose purpose is to counteract the venom inoculated through ophidian bites, i.e. snake bites, but it's also effective against venoms of species such as scorpions or spiders. Todo comienza con el "ordeño" o extracción del veneno de las serpientes (es una actividad muy peligrosa y por lo tanto solo la deben realizar expertos) Esta persona debe sujetar a la serpiente, inmovilizando su cabeza para evitar mordeduras, posteriormente debe hacer que ella muerda un recipiente y de esta forma el veneno comenzará salir de sus colmillos. It all starts with the "milking" or extraction of the venom from the snakes (this is a very dangerous activity and therefore should only be done by experts). This person should hold the snake, immobilising its head to avoid bites, then make it bite a container and in this way the venom will start to come out of its fangs. El veneno obtenido de las serpientes es sometido a un proceso llamado "Liofilización" que es un tipo de desecado en frío, es decir, primero se congela el veneno para cristalizarlo y posteriormente se elimina el hielo a travéz de la sublimación.
The venom obtained from the snakes is subjected to a process called "lyophilisation" which is a type of cold drying, i.e. the venom is first frozen to crystallise it and then the ice is removed by sublimation.
Posteriormente el veneno cristalizado se mezcla con suero salino, creando una solución que posteriormente es inoculada en un animal de gran resistencia, aveces se usan conejos pero usualmente los más usados en esta labor son los caballos. Los expertos van inoculando pequeñas dosis del veneno en estos animales y las van aumentando progresivamente hasta que esté completamente inmunizado. Este proceso dura aproximadamente 10 meses.
The crystallised venom is then mixed with saline, creating a solution which is then inoculated into a highly resistant animal, sometimes rabbits, but usually horses. Experts inoculate small doses of the venom into these animals and progressively increase them until the animal is fully immunised. This process takes approximately 10 months.
A los caballos se les administra primero una anestesia local debido a que la primera reacción de cualquier organismo cuando es invadido por veneno de serpiente, es el dolor, de esta forma se les evita cualquier sufrimiento.
Horses are first given a local anaesthetic because the first reaction of any organism when invaded by snake venom is pain, thus avoiding any suffering.
Una vez que los caballos ya están inmunizados, periodicamente se les extraerán sangre, en este proceso se obtiene alrededor de 10 litros de sangre (esa es la cantidad límite para no debilitarlos)
Once the horses are immunised, blood will be drawn periodically, in this process about 10 litres of blood will be obtained (this is the limit amount in order not to weaken the horses).
La sangre después pasa por un proceso de centrifugación para separar sus componentes y obtener solo los anticuerpos producidos por los caballos.
