George Blanda's career requires a freaking movie. I must have said 'what' about 87 different times while learning about him.
I knew he was a legend, but I was not exactly aware of just how accomplished he was. Blanda had basically three Pro Football careers in one, a very unique, insanely long career.
Blanda was a kicker for a ridiculous quarter of a century from 1949 until he retired at 48 years old in 1975.
Blanda also played QUARTERBACK as well and the man did not become a truly steady starter until the age of 33! Overall, Blanda played QB for maybe half of his career and was a kicker the entire team. How odd yet amazing!
Blanda was a pretty elite QB for a bit, although some of his stats look pretty bad, the game was also played differently in his day.
George's best seasons as a quarterback came with the Oilers! He was the QB from 1960-1966 and he led the Oilers to two AFL Championships and threw for over 19,000 yards. He was also the 1961 AFL MVP for the Oilers.
Blanda retired after the 1975 season and he holds the NFL record for most extra points made in a career and he once threw seven touchdown passes in a single game, which is tied for the NFL record.
What a legend, there likely won't be another player like Blanda, ever.
Threw some insane passes in this game vs the Eagles.
