Ken Houston has to be one of the best safeties of all time. I remember actually using him in Madden Ultimate team, he was quite fun to use.
Never until just a few minutes ago, had I looked up Houston's stats or career in general. This dude was a beast! Just pure greatness for about a decade and a half.
Ken Houston was a ninth round draft pick of the Houston Oilers in 1967. The way his career would play out, he should have been a first round draft pick. Ken had four interceptions as a rookie, and he just kept it rolling all the way until 1980.
Ken was a 2x First-Team All-Pro and a 10x Second-Team All-Pro, he went to 12 straight Pro Bowls from 1968-1979. That's absurdly impressive. Ken also played in every single game from 1967-1978, and he started every game from 1968-1978.
Ken played his first six seasons with the Oilers and his final eight with the Redskins.
Ken was pretty much outstanding in every season he played. But Ken's very best seasons arguably came with the Oilers.
With the Oilers, Ken achieved his career high in interceptions with 9 and in that same season he had a historical 4 pick-sixes which is an NFL record for a single season! He ALSO had a fumble return for a TD that season, what a savage!
All in all, Houston played in 196 games, starting 183 times. He finished his career with 49 interceptions, 9 pick sixes (all with the Oilers), 21 fumble recoveries, and four sacks. I can only imagine what his proper tackle total might have looked like!
Houston is on the 1970's All-Decade Team, is in both the Commanders Ring of Honor and Titans Ring of Honor. He's in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
What a beast of a player!
