Mark Johnston is another player from the sixties. Similarly to Sid Blanks, Johnston had a short but sweet prime of his career. Although Johnston perhaps had a bit longer of a prime than Blanks, but only by a little.
After enjoying a successful college career at Northwestern University, Johnston went pro and played cornerback for the Houston Oilers from 1960-1963. He played a single year longer in 1964 for both the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders before retiring.
Johnston had 4 interceptions in three consecutive seasons from 1960-1962. That's pretty high level consistency if you ask me. He was an AFL All-Pro in 1960 and an AFL All-Star in 1961. His defense was a big factor during the Oilers' consecutive AFL Championships in 1960 and 1961.
His career started strong and ended somewhat quick, but man it just feels good to write about these perhaps mostly forgotten players.
