Today I want to share with you a very special project that I have been working on: making recycled craft paper. ♻️ 🎨 This project is not only a creative way to reuse materials, but also a way to contribute to caring for the environment. Although I'm still in progress, I wanted to show you what I've done so far and how you can do it yourself at home. 📃 It all started on a special afternoon when I asked my mom to remind me how paper was made. She had taught us when we were kids, but it's been over 10 years since then and I had forgotten the process. My mother, with her patience and knowledge, explained each step again to me, and together we prepared our own racks to begin this creative adventure. 📒 For this project, you will need old or used paper, such as magazines, newspapers, notebook pages, etc. Additionally, a hand mixer or blender will be very useful, along with water and a large bucket where we will soak the paper. They'll also need a strainer to clean out the papery pulp, and can add natural additives like garlic shells to give it a unique texture. To give it color, I used natural yellow dye. Finally, you will need wooden racks with mesh, cloths to dry the paper, and a heavy notebook or press to flatten the sheets of paper.
Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes un proyecto muy especial en el que he estado trabajando: la elaboración de papel artesanal reciclado. ♻️ 🎨 Este proyecto no solo es una forma creativa de reutilizar materiales, sino también una manera de contribuir al cuidado del medio ambiente. Aunque todavía estoy en proceso, quería mostrarles lo que llevo hasta ahora y cómo pueden hacerlo ustedes mismos en casa. 📃 Todo comenzó en una tarde especial cuando le pedí a mi mamá que me recordara cómo se hacía el papel. Ella nos había enseñado cuando éramos niñas, pero han pasado más de 10 años desde entonces y se me había olvidado el proceso. Mi mamá, con su paciencia y conocimiento, me explicó nuevamente cada paso, y juntos preparamos nuestros propios bastidores para comenzar esta aventura creativa. 📒 Para este proyecto, necesitarán papel viejo o usado, como revistas, periódicos, hojas de cuadernos, etc. Además, una batidora de mano o licuadora será muy útil, junto con agua y un cubo grande donde remojaremos el papel. También necesitarán un colador para limpiar la pulpa de papel, y pueden agregar aditivos naturales como conchas de ajo para darle una textura única. Para darle color, utilicé colorante natural amarillo. Finalmente, necesitarán bastidores de madera con malla, telas para secar el papel, y un cuaderno pesado o una prensa para aplastar las hojas de papel.
First, we select paper that is no longer in use, such as old magazines, newspapers or any other paper destined to be discarded. The idea is to give a second life to this material. We shred the paper into small pieces and soak it in water for at least a few hours, preferably overnight. This helps soften the fibers of the paper and makes the blending process easier. 📄 Once the paper is well soaked, we blend it with a hand mixer or blender. This process should be done in a large bucket to avoid splashing. The result will be a fairly liquid and uniform paper pulp. It is important to strain this mixture to remove any impurities and ink that the original paper may have. At this stage, they can add natural additives to the paper pulp to give it a unique texture and appearance. We use garlic shells, but you can also use dried flowers, herbs, or even colored threads. The garlic shells were blended together with the pulp and then strained again to obtain a very fine and delicate texture. To give a touch of color to the paper, we prepare a pan with water and natural yellow dye. It is important to use natural dyes to keep the process as environmentally friendly as possible. We pour the shredded paper pulp into the tray and mix well so that the dye is evenly distributed.
Primero, seleccionamos papel que ya no esté en uso, como revistas viejas, periódicos o cualquier otro papel destinado a ser desechado. La idea es darle una segunda vida a este material. Trituramos el papel en trozos pequeños y lo remojamos en agua durante al menos unas horas, preferiblemente toda la noche. Esto ayuda a ablandar las fibras del papel y facilita el proceso de licuado. 📄 Una vez que el papel está bien remojado, lo licuamos con una batidora de mano o una licuadora. Este proceso debe hacerse en un cubo grande para evitar salpicaduras. El resultado será una pulpa de papel bastante líquida y uniforme. Es importante colar esta mezcla para eliminar cualquier impureza y tinta que pueda tener el papel original. En esta etapa, pueden agregar aditivos naturales a la pulpa de papel para darle una textura y apariencia únicas. Nosotros utilizamos conchas de ajo, pero también se pueden usar flores secas, hierbas, o incluso hilos de colores. Las conchas de ajo se licuaron junto con la pulpa y luego se colaron nuevamente para obtener una textura muy fina y delicada. Para darle un toque de color al papel, preparamos una batea con agua y colorante natural amarillo. Es importante utilizar colorantes naturales para mantener el proceso lo más ecológico posible. Vertimos la pulpa de papel triturado en la batea y mezclamos bien para que el colorante se distribuya uniformemente.
The next step is to use the frame to form the sheets of paper. We immerse the frame in the basin with the mixture of pulp and dye, and lift it slowly, allowing the water to drain. The pulp will remain on the mesh of the frame, forming a sheet of paper. This process requires patience and practice to obtain uniform sheets of paper. Once the water has completely drained, we transfer the sheet of paper to a cloth to dry. We let the paper dry completely, which can take several hours or even a whole day, depending on the environmental conditions. To speed up the process, we use moderate heat, making sure not to damage the paper. Once dry, we flatten the paper between the pages of a heavy notebook or use a press to obtain an ultra-fine finish ready to be used or cut according to our needs.
El siguiente paso es utilizar el bastidor para formar las hojas de papel. Sumergimos el bastidor en la batea con la mezcla de pulpa y colorante, y lo levantamos lentamente, dejando que el agua se escurra. La pulpa se quedará sobre la malla del bastidor, formando una hoja de papel. Este proceso requiere paciencia y práctica para obtener hojas de papel uniformes. Una vez que el agua se ha escurrido por completo, transferimos la hoja de papel a una tela para que se seque. Dejamos secar el papel completamente, lo cual puede tomar varias horas o incluso un día entero, dependiendo de las condiciones ambientales. Para acelerar el proceso, utilizamos calor moderado, asegurándonos de no dañar el papel. Una vez seco, aplastamos el papel entre las páginas de un cuaderno pesado o utilizamos una prensa para obtener un acabado ultra fino y listo para ser utilizado o recortado según nuestras necesidades.
This is just the beginning of a very special project. Making recycled paper is not only a rewarding activity, but also a way to connect with sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. Through this process, we can give new life to materials that would otherwise end up in the trash, thus reducing our ecological footprint. 🤍 In future posts, I will show you more details and variations of this procedure, including different natural additives and techniques to obtain unique textures and colors.
