Day three of #HiveBloPoMo and I've already blown my chances for the monthly author badge from - ugh! π
But I'm not giving up on trying to get a daily post out, so I'm going ahead with the post that's been percolating in my brain since before coffee this morning.
With the best of intentions, as I sat yawning at my keyboard at omfg o'clock, I checked today's daily prompt for Hive Blog Posting Month and found it was -
Today is Find a Rainbow Day, so share pics/stories of rainbows
I knew I had a bunch of rainbow photos from over the years, but I'm pretty sure I've already shared the best of them. So I decided to really challenge myself today and sort of combine prompts, namely the "do a 5 minute FreeWrite" one.
After poking around on the interwebz for inspiration (and possible prompts), I decided to do a short fiction piece based on Iris, who is the "personification of a rainbow... once described as being a link to the heavens and earth."
Once again, I used The Most Dangerous Writing App. For those not familiar, it's the one with the motto, "Donβt stop typing, or all progress will be lost." Or in other words, if you stop typing, your words start to fade and after 5 seconds, they disappear completely. Because I've found with writing, I need some way to get out of my head to get the words on the proverbial paper.
While driving the youngest to work, the story framework popped in my brain. I must apologize to Neil Gaiman for stealing the idea from Lucifer, although I'm not sure if Lucifer's therapist was his idea, or something specific to the tv series. Regardless, I "borrowed" the concept of a divine being speaking to a therapist for this prompt.
Unlike in times past, I wasn't all that happy with what I wrote, because it felt like I barely started before the timer went off, and it didn't really jibed with what I thought I wanted to say. I mucked around with it a bit, but now I'm running out of time before I have to hit the hay, so I'm leaving it be for now. Maybe someday I'll expand on this more (or ditch it, if I can't figure it out...lol). And who knows - I might even connect this to other flash fiction pieces I've done, like Becoming the moon. Right, ? π π
At any rate, here's my flash fiction story result.
Rainbow therapy
"So Iris, last time you were telling me about your troubles at work with communication and such. Do you want to pick up from there?"
I sighed and leaned back into the couch, but managed not to roll my eyes. It wasn't Linda's fault - she was a terrific therapist and came highly recommended from a friend who, although he moved in different social circles, could still relate to the trials & tribulations of being a divine being. And I promised him I'd give this a try.
"Okay, so yes, communication seems to be a big thing with everyone these days, and no one gets how tough it is to be the messenger. No matter what people think, it's not all kittens and rainbows. Well technically for me, it is because rainbows are legit my thing."
"What do you mean, your thing?"
"You know, the thing with rainbows being the bridge between the heavens and earth. People and gods. Above and below. They're the way of moving messages between the two."
"What kinds of messages?"
"It's all, smite this village or bless this crop. The usual."
"Smiting, eh? Is that really still a thing?"
"Well not so much lately. And to be honest, there's not much moving from below to above these days - mortals aren't nearly as chatty as they used to be. So for a while now, I've been tasked with delivering between gods. Like social media isn't good enough for them to communicate."
"Why does that bother you?"
"Well, it's all talking at each other, instead of to each other. And it's not even about important stuff - it's more like, do you think Gwyneth will gift Goop goodie bags to the jurors, or OMG have you seen the latest Scandoval drama? Not the best use of my time, if you ask me. No one talks face to face any more. Well, hard to be face to face as a spiritual being, but you know what I mean."
"No, I really don't, but I think I get what you're saying. You feel that they're using you to do what they should be doing themselves?"
"Something like that."

Now it's past my bedtime (of course), but it's still April 3rd in my corner of the world, so I'm going to call it a night. Hope you enjoyed my little bit of fiction, and I plan to continue to blow the dust and cobwebs off my writerly brain this month.
