OutRun: Pure Retro Speed
It was around 1990 when I first discovered this racing gem at a friend’s house. Does anyone else remember this gaming legend? OutRun, developed by Sega in the mid-’80s, began as an arcade hit in 1986 before making its way onto Sega consoles. By 1988, it had been adapted for the Amiga and that’s where I eventually found it a few years later.
My neighbour had an Amiga 500, and OutRun was one of the games we played all the time. You’d slide the 3.5-inch floppy disk into the drive, wait through that familiar whirring sound and then suddenly, the theme music kicked in and the opening credits filled the screen. Back then, that felt like pure magic. We could lose ourselves in it for hours, time just seemed to disappear.
What I loved most about OutRun wasn’t just the nice red Ferrari you drove, but also the girl riding alongside you. The gameplay was simple yet addictive, and for its time, the graphics felt incredibly smooth. The scenery kept changing, and you had to beat the clock to progress, which kept the tension high. Thinking back to those days brings back so many good memories…
Did any of you play this back in the ’90s too?
