A Silver Candelstick?
Sure is. And yes, I purchased it many years ago with a bunch of other crap. I don’t remember how much I paid for it, but if I had to guess I would say only a couple of dollars. I was sifting through some antiques in boxes and came across it a few weeks ago. I thought why not do a post on it. What got me to thinking, more than if it’s silver, was how much Silver does it contain? That is a question I am looking to answer. That is the question I need your help with.
I pulled the candlestick out and it feels like it weighs roughly 8 ounces or so. Not 100% sure on the weight, but that is not the question I have. Question I have is how much silver is contained in this candle stick. On the bottom of the candlestick there is a stamp. The stamp says “Empire Sterling Weighted 382”.
Believe it or not this little bit of information says quite a bit. It tells me that the silver is in fact sterling, which is 92.5% silver. Another piece of information stamped on the bottom, is not a small fact by any means, but rather tells quite the story; “WEIGHTED”. Weighted means that this candle stick is filled with either sand, wax, or another material in order to give it weight so it doesn’t fall over. The piece will be more stable well there’s a lite candle sticking out of the top of it. Who wants something that’s burning to fall over? Not me! LOL So this tells me that the amount of sterling silver contained in this piece, could be rather minimal.
But how minimal really? I have no clue. How do I go about figuring out how much sterling silver is contained in this piece, and less I destroyed? So the next question I have is, Is it worth destroying this piece just to weigh the sterling silver? I think I can answer this question relatively easily… Nope, Not at these silver prices. I may as well wait until silver spikes. Then, maybe I will feel like it would be worth it to destroy something just to find out how much Sterling is in it. At that point I may be willing to sell it. The buyer will most likely want to know how much Silver they’re buying.
Maybe the piece is worth more as a candle stick, a decoration, then it is for the amount of silver it contains.
The things I think about while I’m just sitting staring off at the wall. LOL. Maybe one of my silver stacker friends has some advice or has even cut one of these apart and has answered this question already. Any advice?
Thank you for swinging by my blog and checking out the post. Have a great day!
