So, I'm starting to discover that my parents were stackers as well... just small things, but they definitely collected and held onto silver and gold pieces. Or maybe that is a product of their era... or maybe just an Asian thing... or maybe just a combination of everything!
Anyway, as I have mentioned before... my mum is at a stage where she is bringing us all sorts of little family heirlooms. It is pretty strange, but I think she is decluttering and emptying out her house in preparation for something.... downsizing, possibly?
On this trip, she brought over some stamps and coins, and things like that. And two of the most prized items are these two Millennium coins that were issued by the Perth Mint, both with Certificates of Authenticity and with total runs numbered in the thousands.
So, the first one is the more valuable of the two.... it is a bimetallic coin, with gold in the centre and silver on the outside rim. It sort of reminds me of the old Australian Holey and the Dump from the colonial eras! Except this is with some pretty valuable metals... It isn't that large, but it is pretty heavy for its size. The photo doesn't really do it much justice due to the reflections... I really should learn to do better coin photography! But you can just catch the hint of the yellow of the gold in the central circle that is the globe (with Australia front and centre!).
... and although this 1 ounce pure silver piece is less valuable in terms of metal content... it is by far and away the prettier of the two. The larger face allows for a more intricate design... a colourised view from the lunar surface showing the Sun peeking out from behind the Earth as the millennium comes into view.
On the reverse side of both coins is the Queen's head... the old head of state of Australia (and the rest of the Commonwealth)... after all, she was the person in charge in 2000 (wow, that was 23 years ago!).
Both pieces come in a nice case... with the bimetallic one in a much larger wooden case despite the fact that it is smaller in size. These are two real beauties that my parents have handed down to us, I will be keeping them safe and hopefully passing them down to my kids at some point in the future.
... but I also took the opportunity to show my mother our little silver stash. Lots of interesting coins from the more recent mints... and lots of old silver content collector pieces as well. Nothing crazily valuable, but quite a few things that hail from the 19th century!
