Back in January I shared the 1923 One Florin with KIng George V's portrait on the obverse. In the post I briefly discussed how he looked like his cousin Csar Nichlas II of Imperial Russia.
Well today's coin we get to see ole' George's cousin on a coin. I picked this up at an online auction. It is the 1897 1 Ruble from Imperial Russia.
The coin has a weight of 20 grams and a diameter of 33.6mm. It has a silver content of 90% and contains a lettered edge. The designer was Abraham Grilches. It was minted in St. Petersburg.
The obverse displays a dignified portrait of the Emperor Nicholas II, who was the last Czar of Imperial Russia. The script surrounding his portrait is Cyrillic and translates to "BY THE GRACE OF GOD NICHOLAS II EMPEROR AND AUTOCRAT OF ALL RUSSIA"
Nicholas II was the last Emperor of Russia, reigning from 1894 until his abdication in 1917 during the Russian Revolution. He was born on May 18, 1868, and was the son of Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna.
The reverse is emblazoned with the Imperial two-headed eagle with a crown above, along with the denomination and date. The lettering is also in cyrillic and translates to "ROUBLE".
The edge is smooth and letterd with cyrillic lettering that translates to "Pure Silver 4 zolotniks 21 dolyas". The image above does not show all the lettering.
A "zolotnik" was equal to 1/96 of a Russian pound (or approximately 4.26 grams. "Dolyas" has several meanings, depending on the context. IN this context in means a share or portion.
If you have any further information about this coin you would like to add, like historical information I left out or want to correct any I may have gotten wrong, please drop it in the comments.

Joe
