Hi Stackers,
The Dutch mint clearly goes for low mintage high margin coins nowadays.
The recent losses they made on circulation coins (for Chile ) almost meant the end of the Dutch Mint.
The restrike coming now in the usual 1 and 2 ounce gold and silver is to commemorate 800 years Hanze cities. Hanze cities were a string of cities on rivers and the in Easter Netherlands , Northern Germany and all the way to Russia and Baltics.
The cities allowed free trade and maybe even without taxes. The trade required gold and silver coins like as there were the accepted golden ducats (single and double) and FLorins. Each city could make its own currency which were accpeted all along the route.
The city of Kampen in Netherlands minted its own Florins and Ducats.
The restrike is the Florin. (FL was the abbrev for the Duthc Guilder untill the EURO; yes the first Florins were minted in Florence)
For the LATIN lovers amongst though:
‘FLOR.ARG.CIV.IMP. CAMPEN’, wat ‘silver Florijn of the Civil Empire Kampen’
MATTH.I.D. ROM.IMP.SEM.AVGV’, wat ‘In name of Matthias I as Holey Roman Emperor’
Oh and the 2 ouce gold one for the rich and famous is here:
Enjoy
