20 zł Beatification of John Paul II 2011
This is a collector’s coin issued by the National Bank of Poland in 2011 to mark the beatification of John Paul II – one of those issues that the NBP handles really well and with great care, as the subject is so historically and culturally significant that it would have been inappropriate to treat it casually, and I think the minters approached this task very seriously. On the obverse, we have a crowned eagle with the inscription RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA, the denomination of 20 złoty and the year of issue, 2011, which is standard for Polish collector coins and somehow never bothers me, as this eagle always looks dignified regardless of which coin it appears on. The reverse is definitely more interesting and evocative, as it features, in my view, a rather unsuccessful portrait of John Paul II with the inscription ‘BEATIFICATION OF JOHN PAUL II’ and the date 1 May 2011, and the whole design gives the impression of a very well-thought-out composition which, even to someone who isn’t a big fan of Polish commemorative coins, simply looks nice and dignified, because John Paul II is a figure who holds a very special place in many circles in Poland, and this coin is proof of that.
It is worth mentioning that the beatification took place just six years after the Pope’s death, which, by church standards, is a remarkably swift process and testifies to what an exceptional figure Karol Wojtyła was, not only for the majority of Poles but for the entire Catholic world, and the National Bank of Poland knew full well that such an issue would attract enormous interest, and indeed it did, as coins on this theme remain very popular among collectors to this day, and this is no coincidence. My copy is in mint condition because I received it as a gift (hehe, I’m Orthodox) and it came in the original NBP case along with a certificate, which is always a nice bonus because such coins are best kept this way, rather than loose in a drawer where sooner or later they’ll get a scratch from which there’ll be no turning back and the whole mint condition will be ruined, which would be a shame because it is, after all, 925 silver and a decent chunk of Polish history encapsulated in a 32-millimetre disc. I’m doubly pleased with this gift because, on the one hand, I have a lovely silver coin with an important theme, and on the other, someone has once again proved to me that a collector is the most grateful recipient one could have, and that my circle of friends has already learnt that there’s no problem at all when it comes to choosing a gift for me.

Witam! Kolejny dzień, to kolejna moneta. Na początek będzie ogłoszenie matrymonialne. Szukasz drugiej połówki? kogoś z kim chcesz spędzić całe życie? Wkurza cię coroczne wybieranie prezentów? Jest to moneta kolekcjonerska wydana przez Narodowy Bank Polski w 2011 roku z okazji beatyfikacji Jana Pawła II, czyli jednej z tych emisji które NBP robi naprawdę porządnie i z głową, bo temat jest na tyle ważny historycznie i kulturowo że nie wypadało go potraktować byle jak i myślę że mincerze podeszli do tego zadania bardzo poważnie. Na awersie mamy orła w koronie z napisem RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA oraz nominał 20 złotych i rok emisji 2011, co jest standardem dla polskich monet kolekcjonerskich i jakoś nigdy mi to nie przeszkadza, bo ten orzeł zawsze wygląda dostojnie niezależnie od tego na jakiej monecie się pojawia. Mamy tu jeszcze naprawdę udany obraz papieża wchodzącego po schodach. Rewers jest zdecydowanie ciekawszy i bardziej emocjonalny bo znajdziemy tam według mnie dość nieudany portret Jana Pawła II z napisem BEATYFIKACJA JANA PAWŁA II oraz datą 1 maja 2011, i całość sprawia wrażenie bardzo przemyślanej kompozycji która nawet dla kogoś kto nie jest wielkim fanem polskich monet okolicznościowych wygląda po prostu ładnie i godnie, bo Jan Paweł II to postać która w Polsce ma w wielu kręgach swoje bardzo szczególne miejsce i taka moneta jest tego dowodem.
Warto wspomnieć że beatyfikacja odbyła się zaledwie sześć lat po śmierci papieża, co jak na procedury kościelne jest naprawdę szybkim tempem i świadczy o tym jak wyjątkową postacią był Karol Wojtyła nie tylko dla większości Polaków ale i dla całego katolickiego świata, a NBP wiedział doskonale że taka emisja spotka się z ogromnym zainteresowaniem i rzeczywiście tak było bo monety z tym tematem do dziś cieszą się sporą popularnością wśród kolekcjonerów i nie jest to żaden przypadek. Mój egzemplarz jest w stanie menniczym bo dostałem go w prezencie (hehe jestem prawosławny) i przyszedł w oryginalnym etui NBP razem z certyfikatem, co zawsze jest miłym dodatkiem bo takie monety najlepiej trzymać właśnie tak, a nie luzem w szufladzie gdzie prędzej czy później dostaną ryskę od której nie będzie odwrotu i cały menniczy stan szlag trafi, a szkoda by było bo to jednak srebro próby 925 i porządny kawałek polskiej historii zamknięty w 32 milimetrach krążka. Cieszę się z tego prezentu podwójnie bo z jednej strony mam ładną srebrną monetę z ważnym tematem, a z drugiej strony ktoś mi po raz kolejny udowodnił że kolekcjoner to najwdzięczniejszy obdarowywany jakiego można mieć i że grupa moich znajomych zdążyła się już nauczyć, że z wyborem prezentu dla mnie nie ma żadnego problemu.
