Hello, another day, another coin. Lately, I’ve been focusing on describing less interesting circulation coins. Today I have something much more interesting. This is one of my favorite coins from the Weimar Republic era. I bought the coin some time ago at an online auction. I paid a bit too much for it at the time, but after silver prices rose, I broke even. Take a look!

5 Reichsmarks 1927 TREUSTER DIENER

This is a German commemorative coin minted in 1927 to mark the 80th birthday of Paul von Hindenburg, one of the most important Germans of that incredibly fascinating era, because we’re talking about a man who was a hero of World War I, and who later served for many years as president of the Weimar Republic—and it is precisely these two things that give the coin bearing his likeness such immense historical significance, which is hard to find in ordinary circulation coins. On the obverse, we see a portrait of Hindenburg with the dates 1847–1927 and the inscription REICHSPRÄSIDENT VON HINDENBURG, and it is a portrait done with class because there is no over-the-top embellishment here, just the serious face of an elderly field marshal who lived through events we can at best read about in history books; yet, looking at this obverse, I don’t feel as though I’m holding a page from a history textbook, but rather something very real and human. The reverse is, in my opinion, much more interesting, as it features the coat of arms of the Weimar Republic, and just below it the coat of arms of von Hindenburg und von Beneckendorff and the famous inscription DEUTSCHEN REICHES TREUSTER DIENER, which in English means “the Reich’s most faithful servant”—a phrase that sounds very dignified and grand, yet takes on a completely different meaning when you consider that a few years after this coin was minted, that same Hindenburg appointed Hitler as Chancellor of Germany, and that is precisely what I really like about historical coins—that a single small silver disc can encapsulate the entire tragedy of an entire era.

My specimen has very slight signs of circulation, but the details are preserved very nicely and sharply; the silver still has a pleasant sheen, which always makes a good impression with such old coins, and as for the purchase itself, I won’t hide the fact that at the time of buying it, it hurt a little that I was overpaying (I overpaid by about 15%), but in hindsight and given today’s silver prices, it turns out I made a pretty good deal, and that’s the nice thing about owning older circulation or commemorative silver: even if I buy something for more than I should, the metal will eventually pull me —back on track, and on top of that, I’m left with a coin that holds a huge chunk of history, one that’s truly worth having in a collection. I’m all the more pleased with this purchase because Weimar coins have something special and unique about them—it was an era that lasted only a dozen or so years but left behind numismatics of remarkable interest, and I’m almost certain this isn’t the last such coin to find its way into my hands.

Witam, kolejny dzień, to kolejna moneta. Ostatnio zająłem się opisywaniem monet obiegowych mniej ciekawych. Dziś mam coś o wiele bardziej interesującego. Jest to jeden z moich ulubionych krążków z okresu Republiki Weimarskiej. Monetę kupiłem już jakiś czas temu na internetowej aukcji. Jest to niemiecka moneta okolicznościowa wybita w 1927 roku z okazji 80. urodzin Paula von Hindenburga, jednego z najważniejszych Niemców tamtej niezwykle ciekawej epoki, bo mówimy tu o człowieku który był bohaterem pierwszej wojny światowej, a potem przez wiele lat pełnił funkcję prezydenta Republiki Weimarskiej i właśnie te dwie rzeczy sprawiają że moneta z jego podobizną ma w sobie taki ogromny ciężar historyczny którego próżno szukać w zwykłych obiegówkach. Na awersie mamy portret Hindenburga z datami 1847-1927 i napisem REICHSPRÄSIDENT VON HINDENBURG, i jest to portret zrobiony z klasą bo nie ma tu żadnego przekombinowania, tylko poważna twarz już starego feldmarszałka który przeżył rzeczy o których my możemy co najwyżej czytać w książkach historycznych, a mimo to patrząc na ten awers nie czuję się jakbym trzymał w ręce kawałek podręcznika do historii tylko coś bardzo prawdziwego i ludzkiego. Rewers jest moim zdaniem dużo ciekawszy, gdyż mamy tu herb Republiki Weimarskiej, a zaraz pod nim herb von Hindenburg und von Beneckendorff i słynny napis DEUTSCHEN REICHES TREUSTER DIENER, czyli po polsku najwierniejszy sługa Rzeszy, co brzmi bardzo dostojnie i patetycznie, a jednocześnie nabiera zupełnie innej wymowy kiedy pomyśli się, że kilka lat po wybiciu tej monety ten sam Hindenburg mianował Hitlera kanclerzem Niemiec, i to jest właśnie ta rzecz w monetach historycznych, którą naprawdę lubię, że jeden mały krążek srebra może kryć w sobie całą tragedię jednej z epok.

Mój egzemplarz ma bardzo delikatne ślady obiegu, ale detale są zachowane bardzo ładnie i ostro, srebro nadal przyjemnie połyskuje co zawsze robi dobre wrażenie przy takich starych krążkach płatniczych, a jeśli chodzi o sam zakup to nie ukrywam że w momencie kupowania trochę mnie bolało że przepłacam (przepłaciłem o jakieś 15%), jednak z perspektywy czasu i przy dzisiejszych cenach srebra wychodzi na to że zrobiłem całkiem niezły interes i to jest właśnie ta miła strona posiadania starszego srebra obiegowego lub okolicznościowego, że nawet jeśli coś kupię drożej niż powinienem to kruszec prędzej czy później i tak mnie wyciągnie do góry - na prostą, a do tego zostaje mi jeszcze moneta z ogromnym kawałkiem historii, który naprawdę warto mieć w kolekcji. Cieszę się z tego zakupu tym bardziej że monety weimarskie mają w sobie coś wyjątkowego i niepowtarzalnego, bo to była epoka która trwała zaledwie kilkanaście lat a zostawiła po sobie numizmatykę na ciekawym poziomie, i jestem niemal pewien że nie jest to ostatni taki krążek który trafi w moje rączki.
