Hello. Another day, another coin. Today we have a coin that’s a bit more of a collector’s item, from a rather obscure country – or, to be more precise, from the Free City of Frankfurt. I acquired this coin in a competition organised by the administrators of one of the numismatic groups. Unfortunately, this is yet another coin I swapped for a set of one-mark coins, as I wanted to collect some new years. Besides, I treat these coins as a sort of ‘base’ for swaps, so I can never have enough of them. Do take a look!
Frankfurt 1 Vereinstaler 1860
This is a 1 Vereinstaler from 1860, minted by the Free City of Frankfurt. The name itself is interesting here, because today Frankfurt is generally associated with a large German city, banks, the airport and a more modern atmosphere, whereas here we have a coin from a time when there was not yet a single Germany in the sense we understand it today. There were plenty of smaller states, free cities, duchies and other entities, which are sometimes hard to even make sense of. For me, coins like this are cool precisely because you have to stop for a moment and check what on earth it was. Frankfurt was a free city, so we don’t have a king, emperor or duke on the obverse here, just a depiction of the city itself. The coin dates from 1860, so we’re still before the unification of Germany. Later, everything began to change; aggressive Prussia grew in strength and such independent entities simply kept disappearing from the map. Perhaps to some it’s just another German thaler, but if you read up on it for a moment, it gets more interesting. It is a silver coin, quite substantial in the hand, as it weighs over 18 grams. It is not a small disc that gets lost somewhere among the small change. The Vereinstaler was a standard coin in circulation, but it also had a very clearly defined silver standard. On the reverse, we have the inscription XXX EIN PFUND FEIN, meaning that 30 such thalers equalled one pound of fine silver. I used to find such inscriptions very annoying, as one didn’t know what one was reading, but now I like such things, as you can immediately see that the coin itself tells you something about itself.
On the obverse, we see a female bust facing to the right. This is not a queen, but the personification of Frankfurt, a highly symbolic figure. All around is the inscription FREIE STADT FRANKFURT. The whole thing looks quite serene, a bit classical and perhaps without any great wow factor, but it is not an ugly coin. I even like the fact that instead of yet another ruler, we have a symbol of the city. For a free city, this simply makes perfect sense. On the reverse is a large eagle with outstretched wings, and here it looks much more imposing. The eagle is handsome, large, fills the coin’s field well and immediately gives a more stately impression. Around the edge is the inscription EIN VEREINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN, with the date 1860 at the bottom. My specimen wasn’t in perfect condition, as you can see, but it wasn’t some worn-out piece with no detail either. The bust is clear, the eagle looks good too, so for a coin from the mid-19th century, it’s really not too bad. Obviously, everyone would like to have such items in beautiful condition, but then the price goes through the roof and it’s no longer such fun. I won this coin in a competition, so it was all the more special, because it’s one thing to buy something, but quite another to win it. Later, I swapped it for some marks, because, as I mentioned, I collect them quite broadly and wanted to fill in the years. Perhaps it’s a bit of a shame, as Frankfurt isn’t something you come across every day, but on the other hand, that’s precisely why I keep some coins as a base for swaps. Not everything has to stay in my collection forever. The important thing is that I have a photo, I held the coin in my hand, and now I can write about it properly. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a very lovely piece of old silver from a place that no longer exists in this form, historically speaking.

Witam. kolejny dzień, to kolejna moneta. Dziś mamy monetkę trochę bardziej kolekcjonerską z bardzo nieoczywistego państwa, a dokładniej z Wolnego Miasta Frankfurt. Pieniążek zdobyłem w konkursie organizowanym przez administratorów jednej z grup numizmatycznych. Jest to niestety kolejna monetka, którą wymieniłem za Lot monet o nominale jednej marki, gdyż chciałem dozbierać trochę nowych roczników. Poza tym te monetki traktuję jako taka "baza" do wymian, więc ich nigdy za mało. Zapraszam!
Frankfurt 1 Vereinstaler 1860
Jest to 1 Vereinstaler z 1860 roku, wybity przez Wolne Miasto Frankfurt. I tutaj już sama nazwa jest ciekawa, bo dziś Frankfurt kojarzy się raczej z dużym niemieckim miastem, bankami, lotniskiem i takim bardziej współczesnym klimatem, a tutaj mamy monetę z czasów, kiedy nie było jeszcze jednych jednych Niemiec w takim rozumieniu jak teraz. Było pełno mniejszych państewek, wolnych miast, księstw i innych tworów, które czasem ciężko nawet dobrze poukładać w głowie. Dla mnie takie monety są fajne właśnie przez to, że trzeba się na chwilę zatrzymać i sprawdzić, co to w ogóle było. Frankfurt był wolnym miastem, czyli nie mamy tutaj króla, cesarza czy księcia na awersie, tylko przedstawienie samego miasta. Moneta pochodzi z 1860 roku, więc jesteśmy jeszcze przed zjednoczeniem Niemiec. Później wszystko zaczęło się zmieniać, agresywne Prusy rosły w siłę i takie niezależne twory po prostu znikały cały czas z mapy. Może dla kogoś to tylko kolejny niemiecki talar, ale jak się chwilę poczyta, to robi się ciekawiej. Jest to srebrna moneta, całkiem konkretna w ręce, bo waży ponad 18 gramów. Nie jest to mały krążek, który gdzieś ginie między drobnicą. Vereinstaler był normalną monetą obiegową, ale przy okazji miał bardzo jasno określony standard srebra. Na rewersie mamy napis XXX EIN PFUND FEIN, czyli informację, że 30 takich talarów odpowiadało jednemu funtowi czystego srebra. Kiedyś takie napisy bardzo mnie denerwowały, bo człowiek nie wiedział co czyta, a teraz lubię takie rzeczy, bo od razu widać, że moneta sama coś o sobie mówi.
Na awersie mamy kobiece popiersie zwrócone w prawą stronę. Nie jest to żadna królowa, tylko personifikacja Frankfurtu, czyli taka postać bardzo symboliczna. Dookoła znajduje się napis FREIE STADT FRANKFURT. Całość wygląda dość spokojnie, trochę klasycznie i może bez jakiegoś wielkiego efektu wow, ale nie jest to brzydka moneta. Podoba mi się to nawet, że zamiast kolejnego władcy mamy symbol miasta. Przy wolnym mieście ma to zwyczajnie wielki sens. Na rewersie jest duży orzeł z rozłożonymi skrzydłami i tutaj już wygląda to dużo mocniej. Orzeł jest ładny, duży, dobrze wypełnia pole monety i od razu robi wrażenie bardziej państwowe. Dookoła mamy napis EIN VEREINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN oraz datę 1860 na dole. Mój egzemplarz nie był w stanie idealnym, co zresztą widać, ale też nie był jakimś trupem bez detali. Popiersie jest czytelne, orzeł też wygląda dobrze, więc jak na monetę z połowy XIX wieku naprawdę nie ma tragedii. Wiadomo, że każdy chciałby mieć takie rzeczy w pięknym stanie, ale wtedy cena idzie w kosmos i już nie ma takiej zabawy. Ja tę monetę dostałem w konkursie, więc tym bardziej była bardzo miła, bo jednak co innego kupić, a co innego wygrać. Później poszła na wymianę za marki, bo jak pisałem, zbieram je trochę szerzej i chciałem uzupełnić roczniki. Może trochę szkoda, bo Frankfurt nie trafia się codziennie, ale z drugiej strony właśnie po to trzymam część monet jako bazę do wymian. Nie wszystko musi zostać w mojej kolekcji na zawsze. Ważne, że zdjęcie zostało, moneta była w ręce i teraz można o niej normalnie napisać. Jak dla mnie jest to bardzo przyjemny kawałek starego srebra z miejsca, które już w takim wydaniu historycznie nie istnieje.
