French Indochina is now the modern VIETNAM & CAMBODIA.
The description that came with the coin provided a background:
"France obtained control over IndoChina following its victory over China in the Sino-French War of 1884-85. French Indochina was formed in October of 1887 from Annam, Tonkin, Cochinchina, which together form modern Vietnam, and the Kingdom of Cambodia. Laos was added after the Franco-Siamese War of 1893.
The federation lasted until 1954. In the four protectorates, the French formally left the local rulers in power, who were the Emperors of Vietnam, Kings of Cambodia, and the Kings of Luang Prabang, but in fact gathered all powers into their own hands, the local rulers acting only as figureheads.
1902 French Indochina Silver 20 cents
The obverse depicts Marianne, a symbol of the French Republic, holding a fasces.
The fasces was the symbol of sovereignty, a fasces was a bundle of rods tied with cords, they date back to ancient Rome. Roman Magistrates would be escorted through the crowds by a group of Lictors carrying fasces. In the city itself the fasces had no axe blade. It was only inserted outside the city when the Magistrate was endowed with Imperium. This was the official power of the Senate and People of Rome and not all Magistrates had it. It meant that the Magistrate had the power of life and death in his hands. Members of the “College of Lictors” were almost the only civil servants of Rome. The Magistrate could instruct a Lictor to unbundle his rods and whip an unruly citizen.
This article is dedicated to ! He featured his French Indochina coin sometime last month, but I couldn't find his article anymore.... could it be much earlier?
Correction: It was @coinjoe's coin!
There are silver coins that depict Cambodian animals, the tiger to be specific, of which I have several. I have not come across silver coins from Vietnam but found a 1888 French Indochina Piastre on Ebay!!!
