I’ve had this 1888 Mexico 8 Reales silver coin since October 2021.
I paid $84.55 for it, and I’ve always liked it for what it is... worn, and exactly the kind of piece that feels real in your hand.
It wasn’t perfect then, and it’s not perfect now, but it’s mine. It’s got character. A little wear, a little history, and a look that says it’s been around longer than any of us.
The other day, I was at eBay, just browsing like I usually do. And I saw the same coin, same year, but in noticeably better shape. Cleaner details and sharper edges. Price tag: $150.00.
A few years ago, I probably would’ve talked myself into upgrading to something “better.” But I’ve learned to slow down. There’s always a nicer coin out there. There’s always a higher grade. If you chase every upgrade, you never stop chasing.
So will I buy it?
No. I’m sticking with the one I already own. It’s part of my timeline. I bought it during a certain season of my life, and that matters more to me than a slightly nicer example.
It’s steadying to realize you don’t need more than what’s already in your hand. Not perfect, not the best, just enough. My coin stays. My money stays put. And I’m good with that.
