This past week I mentioned that I have been feeling a little under the weather. I am feeling quite a bit better, still a little lower on energy than I would like. Then again, I would love to have the energy I had when I was 21, but I'll conform myself with a return to my current "normal"... While I was down I was sifting through some files on an old laptop, backing up old family photos and those of my son. In the process I found an old file with some pictures of some silver items, and I shared one recently.
Today I have another pick out of the file. I have always been a big fan of Mexican coinage and have been collecting it ever since I lived in Arizona. This was the early 2000's and silver prices were cheap, so I gladly snapped up any good deals I could find. Out of some of those I must have picked up this one as well.
What catches my eye about this one in particular is the toning on the obverse (front) of the coin. It really draws out so much more detail that you can't easily see with a pristine, white shiny background. It almost makes the golden eagle looks a little "golden"!
About the coin:
From numista.com
What I love about these 5 Pesos coins is they contain a lot of silver and are pretty hefty. They also have the beautiful imagery created by the Mexico City Mint, which is the oldest mint in the Americas. The obverse has the golden eagle with a rattlesnake it's caught as prey perched atop a prickly pear cactus. It's become an iconic image for any Mexican coin fan. The reverse (back) of the coin has Cuauhtémoc an ancient Aztec leader that led his people after the Spanish had invaded. The conquistador Hernán Cortés hanged him fearing an uprising, but in the process made him a martyr that is still respected in Mexico today.
This coin in addition to the great patina has 0.868 Troy ounces of silver, worth about $73.50 at the time of writing. However, collectors will pay considerably more depending on the coin's condition. I won't be selling any time soon however, I like my Mexican silver!
Silver
Silver prices have been up again with the current world instability concerning Iran and the world economy. Over the last five days prices have risen $10 per Troy ounce, which brings into the question is this going to be a sustainable trend in the long run? After the last quick run up we saw a huge crash, hopefully we aren't in for the same kind of surprise all over again!
Silver is still in short supply that will likely push prices higher, and eastern exchanges have also been pressing those prices upward. Just look at the chart over the last five days:

It's always a good idea to invest in precious metals, they will always have value no matter what happens in the world. Just remember the rule of thumb, if you don't physically possess the precious metal it isn't really yours. Just like BTC and Hive!
That will do it for this Saturday, I hope you enjoyed seeing the nice Mexican silver coin, they always produce such nice work! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and thanks for all of your support. It's greatly appreciated! Have a great weekend everyone!
