Welcome back to day nine of my “12 Days of Christmas” precious metals challenge... Today we are taking a serious leap up the value ladder. For years the trusty gold sovereign was considered the perfect entry-level gold coin. It had everything a new stacker could want: small size, beautiful design, deep history and, most importantly, low premiums.
Not long ago you could pick up a sovereign for a price that didn’t make your bank account wince. It was affordable, reliable and universally recognised; truly one of the best gateways into gold stacking But times change, and so does the gold market. With gold smashing through all-time highs these past few years, the humble sovereign has transformed from a beginner’s bargain into a coin now nudging £800. What was once considered small-scale entry gold is now very much a mid-tier investment.
Still, that shouldn’t be seen as a negative. If anything, it highlights just how dramatically the value of gold has surged. The sovereign hasn’t changed, gold has. And the premium these coins now command is simply a reflection of their enduring reputation and the market’s increased appetite for physical assets.
Whether you love them for stacking, collecting or their unmatched British heritage, the sovereign remains a crown jewel of the precious metals world. And for day nine, it certainly earns its place on my Christmas wishlist.
