Soviets for Peace
Introduce Your City community for two weeks is running thу challenge 'Symbols and Signs for Peace'. 
It actually took me time to choose the certain photos to share -- as there are too many to pick up from. I was born and raised in the country that no more you can find on the maps, name is: USSR. And my youth passed under the banner of the Cold War, the struggle between the two systems and propaganda .... The USSR positioned itself as a source of peace, and the United States as a source of aggression and a threat to peace throughout the world (well, who will answer me without getting into Wikipedia: how much strike aircraft carriers now has the United States as part of its fleet, in order to ensure "peace all over the world" with their help?! ..)
Мне пришлось таки почесать голову, что показать. Есть много из чего выбрать... Я родился и вырос в стране, которую теперь не найти на политической карте мира: СССР. Мои юные годы прошли под флагом Холодной войны, борьбы двух систем и тотальной пропаганды. СССР позиционировал себя как источник мира, а США были источником агрессии и угрозы миру во всём мире (а ну, кто мне ответит не залезая в википедию: сколько ударных авианосцев сейчас имеет США в составе своего флота, для того чтобы с их помощью обеспечивать "мир во всем мире"?!..)
Therefore, the theme of peace was constantly exaggerated from this angle in the print press, radio and movies (there was no Internet then). Of course, it has also found its expression in architecture.
Поэтому тема мира все время активно муссировалась под этим углом в печатной прессе, радио и кинофильмах (интернета тогда еще не было). Разумеется, она нашла свое выражение и в архитектуре.
Design elements at the various Tube stations in Moscow, Russia. All are implementing same symbolics from the USSR national emblem: sickle, hammer, and ears of wheat.
Еще парочка фотографий, с разных станций. Элементы дизайна заимствуют всё те же символы мирного труда хлебороба и рабочего.
In this design, the sickle, hammer, and ears of wheat are supplemented by two more "horns of plenty" full of harvest. This in fact is a ventilation grille, an important functional element for a tube station. Design does impress, isnt it?
В этом варианте дизайна к серпу, молоту и колосьям пшеницы добавлены еще два "рога изобилия", полных собранного урожая. На фотографии, на самом деле - вентиляционная решетка, важный для станции метро конструктивный точнее функциональный элемент. Но каков дизайн, а?

Already at the time of its formation, in 1918, the young state took care to include elements in its coat of arms and state symbols: a peasant's sickle, a worker's hammer, wheat ears, denoting peaceful labor ... as opposed to traditional imperialist and predatory symbols, meaning strong power with strong fists and weapons: all sorts of lions, eagles, cannons, etc.
Да уже в момент своего образования, в 1918-м году, молодое государство позаботилось включить в свой герб и государственную символику элементы: серп крестьянина, молоток рабочего, пшеничные колосья,- обозначающие мирный труд... в противовес традиционным символам, означающим сильную власть с крепкими кулаками: всякие львы, орлы, пушки и т.д.
Early versions of the Soviet money of the young worker-peasant Russian republic. The peasants, putting aside the scythe, read a book - they increase literacy. You see a numerous sickles everywhere -- at that time Russia was a country of mostly peasant population...)
Ранние версии советских денег молодой рабоче-крестьянской Российской республики. Крестьяне, отложив косу, читают книгу - повышают грамотность. Многочисленные серпы (Россия была на тот момент страной крестьянского населения... )
A silver coin of 50 kopecks with a wonderful design - a figurine of a "Worker-blacksmith who forges his own happiness... and the rising sun on the horizon symbolizes the coming of a new era of the world - a free labor and happiness for all people of labor, life without wars, without imperialism, and even possibly without money. But then the 60s ended, and it became clear to everyone who is not an idiot: money turned out to be stronger than anything, and defeated everything holy and good that remained in stock for humanity, including even art.

Серебряная монетка в 50 копеек с замечательным дизайном - фигурка "Рабочего-кузнеца, который сам кует свое счастье"... а восходящее солнце на горизонте символизирует приход новой эпохи мира - свободного труда и счастья для всех людей труда, жизни без войн, без империализма, и даже возможно без денег. Но потом закончились 60-е годы, и стало понятно каждому кто не идиот: деньги оказались сильнее всего, и победили всё святое и хорошее, что осталось в запасе у человечества, включая даже и искусство.
SO it happened (coincidentally) that in May, 2021 I paid a short visit to Moscow, the capital of Russia, and used the opportunity to take a lot of pictures of the Moscow underground; for the most part, it was built in the Soviet era, and fully reflects all the agitprop on the theme of a happy peaceful life of the Soviet labour people and the peaceful aspirations of the Soviet state. (Perhaps our army was smaller and weaker than the USA one, but anyway it was big, strong and took part in many events, including Vietnam-69, Afghanistan, Angola, Hungary-56, Czechoslovakia-68 ... etc.)
B мае прошлого года я нанес краткий визит в Москву, и наделал энное количество фоток Московского метро. Большая его часть была построена в советское время и в полной мере отражает весь агитпроп на тему счастливой мирной жизни советского трудового народа и мирных устремлений советского государства. (Возможно, наша армия была меньше и слабее американской, но она была в любом случае большой, сильной и много где поучаствовала, включая Вьетнам, Афганистан, Анголу, Венгрию-56, Чехословакию-68... и т.д.)

In the photo above, the mosaic "Peace for the World", photographed at the Novoslobodskaya station of the Moscow tube (station was launched back in the year of 1952 -- before Elvis Presley was signed). Now there is a non-illusory chance that all this beauty may perish if the confrontation between Russia and NATO ends in a bombardment. These days, I think about my little photo archive exactly from this angle.
As you know, three things are inevitable: death, taxes and data loss... in case of a bombing and a nuclear post-apocalypse, the loss of my photo archive will not be the most irritating thing to feel sorry for, but I never thought about the loss of information in this way...
На фото мозаика "Мир во всём мире" co станции "Новослободская" московского метрополитена. Существует неиллюзорный шанс, что вся эта красота может погибнуть, если противостояние России и НАТО закончится бомбардировкой. В эти дни я думаю о своем небольшом фотоархиве примерно под таким углом зрения.
Как известно, три вещи неизбежны: смерть, налоги и потеря данных... в случае бомбардировки и ядерного пост-апокалипсиса потеря фотоархива будет не самым волнующим меня вопросом, но вот в таком разрезе про потерю информации -- я никогда раньше не думал.
I cannot but add this image to my post, tho it was not my capture, I found it in the web. Tho I'd love to take it myself, but I cant pretend that I have this vintage beauty from 1955 in my posession. It was the time of the panic and hysteria, when the world was balancing on the edge, and the folks from America and Europe were really scared of the world tomorrow can go in pieces... i.e. in atoms.
Moscow tube has two stations with the name "Prospect of the Peace" - and one of them has a corresponding design, showing the peaceful life of happy people. In fact, many other stations apply the same idea in design. I'll be brief and show only two photos to give you an idea (to make a good report, to show all the details, I'll need a separate post). A boy and a girl, maybe students educate themselves with the help of books (of course, books, not smartphones); children play with simple toys such as a ball, an airplane; girl, caring for flowers, grapes, fruit trees; folks harvesting fruits - these are the stories used in the design of these stations.
Московское метро имеет целых две станции с названием "Проспект Мира" - и одна из них имеет соответствующий дизайн, показывающий мирную жизнь счастливых людей. На самом деле, и многие другие станции применяют ту же идею в дизайне. Я буду краток и покажу только две фотографии, чтобы вы имели представление (чтобы сделать хороший репортаж, показать все детали, мне потребуется отдельный пост). Мальчик и девушка - студенты обучают себя при помощи книг (разумеется книг, а не смартфонов); дети играют при помощи простых игрушек таких как мячик, самолет; девушка, ухаживает за цветами, виноградом, плодовыми деревьями; сбор фруктов - вот такие сюжеты использованы в дизайне этих станций.
And the last. One of the metro stations in Moscow is called "Kievskaya", its rich mosaic decor reproduces various scenes from the joint life of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples. I find it difficult to translate this inscription, I'm afraid Google will not be able to help with this yet. The inscription begins with a statement about the eternal and indestructible friendship and union of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples, which can help them achieve joint prosperity...
Haven't heard (yet) of any plans to rename the station and redesign it. I wonder if there is a "Moskovskaya" station in Kyiv?
И последнее. Одна из станций метро в Москве называется "Киевская", ее богатый мозаичный декор воспроизводит разнообразные сцены из совместной жизни русского и украинского народов. Я затрудняюсь делать перевод этой надписи, боюсь гугль еще не сможет помочь в этом. Надпись начинается с утверждения о вечной и не поддающейся распаду дружбе и союзе русского и украинского народов, который сможет помочь им достичь совместного процветания...
Я не слышал о планах переименования станции и обновить ее дизайн. Интересно, а существует ли в Киеве станция "Московская"?
