It's finally almost the weekend. The week seemed to fly by, as it does every week anymore. I hope you've all had a great week. Since it is Friday I'll be doing another post on Nineties Friday. It's a weekly event where you can share just about anything from the decade of the 1990's. Clothes, music, TV shows, movies, yearbooks, etc. Your imagination really is the limit of this one. Every week one winner is randomly chosen to win 6 HSBI units, three from and three from myself. Feel free to join us creating your own post, just place it in the Nineties Friday community and add a shoutout to
just to be safe.
Today I've already seen a couple entries and they were a lot of fun. Including references to the Jerry Springer Show by . He only for got to add in Ricky Lake...
To kick off this week's post I decided to go with another Tim Burton classic movie, "The Nightmare Before Christmas". It will be returning the theaters on October 11, 2024 if you want to have the original theater experience! I thought of this one because of the re-release and the success "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice" is having at the box office right now. I haven't seen it yet, any of you?
Back to "The Nightmare Before Christmas"... This stop motion animated movie became a classic for both Halloween and Christmas. Production was started in July 1991 and the movie released in October 1993. This movie teamed Hollywood legends Tim Burton and Danny Elfman yet again, Elfman doing to music and singing voice of lead character Jack Skellinton and Burton producing. In the movie Skellington is the king of Halloween but finds himself bored with it. After stumbling upon Christmas town he decides that he wants to have his own Christmas by replacing Santa Claus. For those who haven't seen it, it's streaming on Disney.
The Mask
slashfilm.com
This 1994 movie starring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz was a huge success. It also helped further propel both stars career's into mainstream Hollywood. Carrey's character Stanley Ipkiss finds a mask that turns him into a cartoonish character with supernatural abilities. If you haven't seen this one it's well worth the time to watch it. I'm not sure where this one is streaming these days, but you can find most movies on one service or another most of the time!
Now let's move onto some music for the 1990's!
The Offspring
guitarworld.com
Formed in 1984 in Garden Grove, California not far from where I live now. These guys took ten years before they managed to break into mainstream music and did so in a big way with the album "Smash". They did produce two albums prior to this that didn't sell all that well, but if you like the band they have some great music. Today I'll go with the song "Self Esteem" off of the album "Smash":
Inner Circle
I've been in the mood for some Bob Marley lately, sadly he doesn't fit into the 90's very well. So next best thing is a cover of one his songs done in the decade. Inner Circle was originally formed in 1968 in Kingston, Jamaica. Founder Jacob Miller who was friends with Marley died in a car crash in 1980. The band came back with a new lineup in the 1980's and recorded well known song "Bad Boys" used in the TV show Cops. In 1991 they did a cover of the old Bob Marley tune "Sweat":
Because I spent most of the 1990's in countries that really only speak Spanish I usually like to throw in one or two songs from the era.
Lucero
proyectopuente.com.mx
Lucero is a Mexican singer that has been in the business since childhood both acting and singing. In her teen years she went by Lucerito (little Lucero literally) and with here album "Sólo Pienso en Ti" (I only think about you) was her big push into the more adult music market moving away from the teen years. Published in 1991 it became a huge seller throughout Latin America and I recall hearing songs off the album all the time back in '91. Her lead track was the song "Ya No" (Not anymore), great song but isn't one of the best music videos I've ever seen. Remarkably this one was remastered, most videos of this era came from VHS and are really blurry.
That will wrap up this edition of #nintetiesfriday . I hope you enjoyed some or all of the items I shared, they were fun to put together! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. I want to thank all of you for all of your support, it really mean a lot to me and is greatly appreciated. I am moving closer to dolphin level every day thanks to you guys! Have a great weekend!
