When I was a young officer in the French Navy, my first post was in French Polynesia (Tahiti). I remember having a conversation with one of my uncles (who was a Captain Navy in Paris) using an HF (or maybe MF) frequency. We were able to converse (slowly) over half of the earth circumference.
