We're talking about cold-pitching possible clients.
and I get asked lots of questions about business.
I decided to take some of the most common questions and make them into posts to help others who may have wondered similar things about their own business.
DO I HAVE TO COLD-APPROACH PEOPLE?
Nike cold-approached to start making money. Bill Bowerman & Phil Knight drove to track meets all over the USA and sold their shoes out of the trunk of their car to runners.
As did Sara Blakely of Spanx. She convinced Saks to sell her product and Saks put Spanx on a rack in the ladies department. But that wasn't enough for Sarah so she went to Saks every weekend and offered them to women who were trying on clothes. She did it until Oprah found her product and had Sarah on her show.
As did Jay Z. He sold his CDs out of the trunk of his car one by one just like Nike.
As did Bill Gates...
"There’s no secret. I knocked on door after door. I showed my idea to 1200 people. 900 said no. 300 showed some interest. Only 85 people actually did anything. 30 took a serious look. And 11 made me a billionaire." - Bill Gates
Every founder you can name cold-approached to some degree or another. Skipping cold messaging is like skipping groceries, (or refusing to order out) but still wanting to eat. It never goes well.
Edit: (Thanks ) The companies I mentioned above pitched their target audience. If you're pitching people who aren't in your target then they won't care about what you're selling or what you can do for them.
But what if I still think “Ew, cold-pitching is yucky?”
Sorry you feel that way but every business does it in one form or another.
Cold DM messages
Cold calls
Cold emails (that spam you always get in your emails...they keep sending it because it WORKS!)
Advertising
Leaving comments on your target audience's posts
And more...
