Another colourless day at the sunny beach
Dare I stroll, my naked legs thrashing through soft sand
As rippling waves crest on another
My mind as tempestuous as a raging sea
Wanting the calm of watching people
A foot in front of another and hands clasped on my back,
Traipsing on tan sand, my eyes dart around
Taking in every scene and action of people
Like a silent beach sentinel
Watching their expressions for tales untold
I set up multiple blank canvases on easels in my head
And begin to splash bold and vibrant colours
Their laughs revealing tranquillity and joy,
A reflection of their hopes and dreams fulfilled
Contagious as fever, I shiver with a smile and nod
Melodious laughter of children in pursuit of each other
Echoes sweetly in my ears, soothing the tempest
The soft, beige sand, a bed to cushion their gleeful wrestles
Their innocence, a shield against the horrors in the world
But when they grow, will the laugh sound the same?
I mix colours of love and reality on my canvas
As lovers stroll by, hands and hearts interlaced in romance
Some shared dreamy glances tell tales of pretence and woes
And others tell of commitment, loyalty and forever
The storm yet unsettled in my mind
The colours on my palette are mismatched, swirling in confusion
As I seek for the right hue to paint a group of elderly people
Their wrinkles are timeless, the shine in their calm eyes
A tale of lives lived against the odds
Yet their smiles are anchored by hope in the beauty of life
Finally, a quiet sigh at the end of my watch
The sea of my mind in a state of temporal calm.
