Today I will be reviewing Super Boss Collection. I have covered quite a few Super Mario 64 hacks, this is an older version of mario games. The basic concept of this game is that there are 56 different bosses that you can fight at any time in any order. I would describe this ROM hack as a "training" type game.
There is no map in this ROM Hack. There is only one level. "Boss Select".
Once you enter the Boss Select level, you cannot move. There is a scrolling option where you can pick any of the 56 total bosses in the game.
Before every boss, you enter a room with a free mushroom and Fire flower. Some of the bosses are really difficult, so you pretty much need these pre-boss powerups.
The first boss I tried to beat was extremely difficult. The boss was Star Man from Mega Man 5. This boss has a special move where 3 stars rotate quickly around the Boss. Jumping onto the boss is not an easy task. It took many attempts to defeat the Star Man.
The next boss I fought was very easy. You just needed to jump onto the enemy and he goes into his shell. Then you need to jump and the level tilts and the boss falls off. The bosses clearly aren't in order by difficulty. Some of the bosses are from retro games that I have never played. Picking enemies at random that I have never heard of was really fun. With 56 bosses, you are sure to fight some bosses you have never heard of.
Overall, I would give this game an 8/10. I'm a huge fan of hybrid games where a ROM hack uses multiple games to make a new game. If you are an old skool mario lover this is a must play. This ROM Hack is great practice. If you spend some time defeating the 56 bosses in this game, you will become a side scroller expert. A lot of time when into this game. Every boss room has different patching that matches the theme of the boss. The only thing I don't like is there isn't any map. This makes it more of a "training" style game. If you can find this ROM hack, I recommend playing it.
