Nowadays you have to take whatever you're given; specially depending of you budget. But luckily, if you don't have any sort of budget to buy games today (or don't want to spend it in the kind of triple-A microtransaction game service lootbox DLC scissors kick nightmare that is the game industry today...good lord), then...just grab some free goodies!
If you don't have enough to shell out on a Nintendo console and your current day Mario Kart (we already have talked about Tour) for a dose of multiplayer kart racing, then Super Tux Kart is here to save your party! And its not just available for Linux, but for Windows as well!
Don't get fooled by that goblin in your head screaming "BLEHHH IT LOOKS DATED AND OLD AND NOT MARIO KART 8 BLEHHH" from first glance: Between how some maps do look pretty good and being completely developed for free AND being available for free, its an absolute package for the price of NOTHING!
And of course you should give a shot at playing the game rather than just looking at it as well.
For starters, it is another one of those racing games that actually include an adventure mode with an overworld and everything (Crash Team Racing, Diddy Kong Racing, Lego Racers 2)...which considering the conditions this came from, its quite impressive! And how would you not be interested in it?? Some random alien stole the leader of all free software, the Gnu, and forced Tux to race against him to get him back!!
Just look at that face- HE IS DEVASTATED!! And now has to face alone countless grand prix races in order to restore the internal turmoil in his heart from such a heinous crime...
Anyways, did I mention that it has an overworld and everything?
But enough of Tux's existential crisis, you can enjoy several single player modes on your own (Single Race, Time Attack, Ghost Race, Battle Mode, and even a Soccer mode a la Rocket League) with around 20 tracks included in the game...and play all of this in both split-screen mutliplayer and online multiplayer! I know that the multiplayer can actually be fun because I grabbed a buddy and smacked his face into Super Tux Kart, and both of us enjoyed it! Getting used to how the drifts are is a bit of a detail, but other than that, its surprisingly good enough to mess around with your chums.
And due to the open source nature of the game, it has built-in support for extra content like new characters and maps made by others, even including a catalog in-game to check and download many of this community-made content (as well as being able to download stuff you find outside of the website/game). You see this cat thing on a shopping cart?
Its name is Link...and I downloaded it thinking that it was the one from The Legend of Zelda (since the in-game addon downloader doesn't have previews). But it should show you how relatively easy downloading new stuff you find for the game can be.
But in any case, if you want to give a shot to a new kart racer without having to stick your nose in a plumber's pants (and leave your wallet in it), try a new adventure mode in a kart racer, or just have something silly to try with your friends at your home or in China, then check this out!
And you better not just spit on it because of the looks: If you would decide to despise this poor penguin and don't give him any chance to achieve his dream of racing at the big league, then you might not have a soul.
