Trivia Tuesday is a series in which I choose a topic, and provide Fun Facts or Interesting Trivia about it. This time we'll be talking about Speedruns. The concept of racing to beat video games in record times.
Speedrunning
1. What's a Speedrun?
A Speedrun is a playthrough of the game while intending to complete it in the shortest time possible. A speedrun can be for a full game or a section of a game, and there are many rules you can choose to follow. Usually, a speedrun is recorded and submitted to one of the community websites that list the game.
I've been interested in speedruns for a while, but I'm kind of slow paced gamer so I never seriously tried myself.
2. Early Community
While the origin of Speedrunning can be traced to as early as video games have been around. Doom was one of the first games to build a community around it because the game featured the option to record playthroughs in a lightweight "demo" files that could be shared and played by other players.
According to ChatGPT, the earliest documented speedrun was in 1994 when a player beat Zelda Ocarina of Time in 30 minutes.
Nowadays you can find speedruns for almost any game on speedruns.com
3. GDQ - Games Done Quick
GDQs are worldwide events that are run by various speedrunning communities. Usually, speedrunners would participate in the streams to raise money for Charity.
While I didn't watch any of these yet, I'm well aware of them, and hopefully I watch one next time they do Games Done Quick.
4. Glitch x Glitch
Many speedruns make use of games glitches to skip levels or beat them faster than intended. Some speedrunners even do glitch exhibitions, streams that showcase the games glitches and explain how to trigger them.
I'm amazed at how specific some of these glitches are. Makes me wonder, who was crazy enough to find them in the first place.
5. Randomizers
Randomizers are various Mods that add unpredictability and challenge to video games.
I've seen some Pokemon randomizers and FFVII's randomizer in action! They can make the game feel like a completely new one.
What do you think?
Since I'm interested in Speedruns for a while, I still have some trivia pieces I could do in the future. Tell me if you want a follow-up to this entry. If you have an idea for the next Trivia Tuesday's Topic, suggest it in a comment below. For now, have a nice day/night.~
